Pentagon:The U.S. and allies are working toward de-escalating tensions and finding a diplomatic resolution to the current situation in the Kerch Strait and Sea of Azov.
Pentagon officials are calling Russia's recent attack upon Ukrainian vessels in the Sea of Azov a major threat to the United States, Europe and Ukraine and demanding Russia return the sailors it has captured.
"Russia’s aggression is not simply a matter for Ukraine. It is a threat to the region, to Europe, to the United States, and to the stability of the international order," Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon told Warrior Maven in a statement.
Pahon emphasized that the formal lead on the response, given that the priority is to use diplomacy to "de-escalate" the situation, but did express DoD's serious concern about the unexpected attack.
The Pentagon "will not speculate on possible military responses," Pahon added, however his DoD statement emphatically voiced support for Ukraine's "territorial integrity" and insisted Russia not "harass" the lawful transit in the Kerch Strait and Sea of Azov.
"Crimea is Ukraine," Pahon said.
According to an Editorial from the New York Times, the Russian actions violate a prior 2004 treaty identifying the Kerch Straight as shared territorial waters - and therefore do violate Ukraine's territory.
According to the Law of the Sea Convention, 12-miles off of the coast of a given area - amount to an extension of that country's territory - therefore raising the clear prospect that the attack violates international law.
