Pike Creek, DE - Police say that a homeowner in Pike creek fatally shot an intruder Monday night.

The incident happened in the 1100 block of Flint Hill, according to 6ABC.

New Castle County Corporal Michel Eckerd says that the homeowner was in the garage when he heard a "suspicious" noise.

The homeowner then contacted his family members and determined that the sound didn't come from them.

Corporal Eckerd says that the homeowner grabbed his firearm and went to investigate. That's when the homeowner located 20-year-old Elijah Gordy-Stith hiding in the house.

An altercation ensued between the homeowner and Gordy-Smith. The home invader was shot in the altercation.

Gordy-Smith was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A neighbor told 6ABC, "If someone broke into your house, you're going to react for your safety."

No charges have been filed against the homeowner at this time.
