Would-Be School Shooter Dead After Gunfight With Police At Middle School
Richmond, IN – A teenage boy shot himself at a middle school after exchanging gunfire with police officers on Thursday morning.
Indiana State Police said at a press conference after the incident that officers had received information that somebody was en route to Dennis Middle School in Richmond to do a school shooting, WFLD reported.
Indiana State Police Sergeant John Bowling told reporters that officers responded very quickly to the school, and police confronted the suspect outside of the school.
There was an exchange of gunfire and then the teen suspect decided to take his own life, Sgt. Bowling said.
“The fortunate part of this, if there is any, is that no students were injured, and no officers. And mainly because someone knew something and they said something,” the sergeant said. “They warned police and police were able to respond. The school was able to follow procedure to help protect students here.”
Sgt. Bowling said initial reporters of a hostage situation were incorrect.
No motive for the incident was yet known, according to police.
“It’s ongoing, the scene is fluid, and we have investigators and crime technicians in there now,” Sgt. Bowling explained.
He said that he was unable to verify whether the shooter was actually inside the school at any point.
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb released a statement late Thursday morning.
"Earlier this morning, I directed the Indiana State Police to work with all local responders at the shooting at Dennis Intermediate School," Holcomb said. "We will continue to work with the school and Superintendent Jennifer McCormick to do everything possible to assist the community and support all those impacted by this terrible unfolding situation."
