Would-Be Rapist Attacks Deputy's Wife, So She Starts Stabbing Him With His Knife

Stephen Purcell attacked a deputy's wife at her home, just after getting out of jail.

Lawrence County, TN - A would-be rapist was stabbed with his own knife after he attacked a Lawrence County Sheriff's deputy's wife, tied her up, and ripped off her clothes.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon when the 25-year old woman was home alone, according to WKRN.

31-year-old Stephen Purcell hid his vehicle near the deputy's residence, and then sneaked over to the house.

Captain Adam Brewer said that the deputy's wife heard noises, so she opened her garage, and found Purcell in her garage wearing a mask.

That's when Purcell started beating the 5-foot 3-inch, 100-pound woman.

"He was striking her in the face with his fist, ended up on top of her at one point and eventually pulled a knife, holding it to her throat, she was able to fight him, and get the knife away and stab him a couple of times, once in the side of the head," Captain Brewer said, according to WKRN.

Purcell was able to zip tie her hands and ripped off her clothes. She was able to escape during the attack and run to a neighbor for help.

That's when Purcell called 911 and pretended to be a witness to the attack.

Purcell changed his story later and claimed that two masked men coerced him to attack the woman. There is no evidence to support his claim, but there is plenty of evidence that he committed the attack.

Purcell had the knife used in the attack on him at the time of his arrest.

He also had bite marks from from the attack.

The police are investigating if the attack was retaliation against the deputy.

"He and his wife are family, to have to go through this, she is a remarkable young lady. She really is. She fought for her life. She is a small lady, but she has a lot of fight a lot of spunk," Sheriff Brown said, according to WKRN.

It was later learned that Purcell had bonded out of jail just hours before the attack. He had been arrested multiple times in the past year for crimes like robbery, kidnapping, and rape.

After hearing about Purcell's criminal history, people started to blame the sheriff's office for letting him out of jail. They responded openly to the criticism, saying:

First and foremost, let us make it clear, OUR DEPARTMENT DOES NOT SET BONDS. Bonds are set by a presiding magastrate or judge based on the charges at hand and any other relevant circumstances at that time.

Secondly, OUR DEPARTMENT DOES NOT SENTENCE SUBJECTS. A sentence an individual is given again comes from a judge, sometimes in coordination with the district attorney's office in the instances of a plea deal etc.

If you disagree with a bond amount or the sentence on a given case, we strongly encourage you to address that with the judge, magistrate or district attorney responsible for it, not our department.

Our officers are just as frustrated as the general public when we see repeat offenders or offenders with serious charges back on the streets days after we arrest them, but there is little we can do besides keep arresting them.

Further, our officer's jobs are already tough enough without having to read this kind of misinformation constantly on social media. So please help us inform the public by sharing this post.

Purcell has been charged with five new felonies including attempted first degree murder, attempted aggravated rape, and aggravated kidnapping. He is being held on a $1 million bond.

Do you think that the courts go easy on violent felons? We'd like to hear from you. Please let us know in the comments.

The longer this animal spends in a cage the better for society. The potential victim did a fantastic job!

If a Million Dollar Bond was Just that 1 Million and not only a % of the Millions needing to be paid that might help, and the ability to leverage property and other items is not good, often its a caring friend or family member who looses there homes a bond should be on the persons head if you want to loan him a million dollars that million dollars should be placed at the time of release into a fund and if he flees then you lose it and cannot go to his family or anyone to pay your loss, the idea he has to pay you a % of the money is a bad Idea too, perhaps looking and the Bonding Idea harder is needed the law is a business for money and nothing to do with protecting the people

Blaming the police again for something that isn't their fault.....I am sure there are lot of criminals that police wish they could keep behind bars but the judge says they have to let them go....and BTW, kudos to the wife...I know I'd hate to get her pissed off at me!!!

Would often wish that it be mandatory, that ALL judges go on a ‘ride-a-long’ with the local Police / Sheriffs at least once a month on either a full moon or Mother’s Day ( the day the welfare checks came out) maybe it would open their eyes to what the LEO’s face on a day to day basis.

It’s way past time judges were held accountable for their lax enforcement of the judicial consequences crimes are mandated to be given. I am sick of the catch and release of violent felons while marijuana possession gets maximum jail time! It’s absurd. I’m also sick of the bias of excusing black perpetrators by liberal judges because somehow society owes them something. Don’t get me started on places like California who would rather release a violent felon illegal alien back into the public than follow the law and release them to ICE. Our country was founded on law and order but our justice system has been hijacked by Social Justice idiots who think a hug and a pat on the back and all’s forgiven will turn these criminals to the good side. Here’s a clue...it ain’t working!

Absolutely the courts go easy on violent felon. I agree its tough read criticism against yourself but the blame list is longer than a given sheriffs department. The judges are to blame. The prison system is to blame. Local politicians to those departments are to blame. Last but not least is also the activists that say CRIMINALS rights are as or more important than the everyday citizens rights, are to blame as well!

EXCELLENT response, fellow LEO Wife! I've always told my husband that if I were ever attacked I'd make sure that people were pulling ME off of the assaulter not the other way around 😁

Somewhere during the past 15-20 years, victims rights became 2nd to the suspects rights. Govenors, etc in states became more concerned about prisoners "feelings", overcrowding in jails & prisons became a reson for them to change felony sentences (just look at CA), Judges jumped on board and became extremely leinent when handing out sentences to repeat offenders, etc ALL taking so called pity on criminals (violent offenders), thus saying the victims have no rights for safety, for their trauma caused by the felon and also saying the general, law abiding citizens have no rights of protection from these repeat felony committing scum bacause time & time they are releasing these men (and women) who go right back out & committ same crimes but a lot of times murder victims so that victim cant speak out agaist him in next court case, absolutly insane our Judges, govenors, Mayors, etc have put violent felons so-called rights before all others when violent felons dont care about their victims rights or safety.

Brave and tough lady! Now find a firearm you like and learn to use it! I also like the sheriff dept's response to public criticism. People complain about what they do (or don't) constantly without knowing what they are talking about. Very educational response. Talk to those responsible!
