Woman Puts Dog In Car Trunk After Shelter Refuses To Euthanize It, Gets Arrested

Deputies arrested Sarah Perry for felony animal abuse after she was caught on video putting her dog in the trunk.

Brevard County, FL – Deputies have arrested a woman who was caught on video stuffing her dog in the trunk of her car after the local animal shelter refused to euthanize it for her (video below).

Deputies said 27-year-old Sarah Perry said she tried to turn her family pet in to an animal shelter because she couldn’t care for it anymore, WBMA reported.

But the shelter said it was completely full and had no room for the dog.

Perry asked them to put her dog to sleep instead and the shelter informed her they do not euthanize animals for the public, according to Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey in a video posted to the sheriff department’s official Facebook page.

The woman became very angry and went back out to her car, where she proceeded to stuff the dog into the trunk.

She closed the trunk and drove off, but not before a good Samaritan saw what was happening.

Sheriff Ivey said a bystander captured cell phone video of the unbelievable scene, and then called police with a description of the woman, her vehicle, and the license plate number.

Brevard County sheriff’s deputies immediately responded to the scene, he said.

The sheriff said deputies were able to identify the suspect, and locate and rescue the dog.

He said the dog was visibly emaciated and appeared to have been neglected.

Deputies transported the pooch to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Care Center where a veterinarian said the dog was terribly dehydrated and malnourished and generally in poor health, according to the sheriff.

Sheriff Ivey said deputies arrested Perry on Thursday afternoon.

She is charged with felony animal abuse and the sheriff said his department would work closely with the state’s attorney to make sure Perry got the maximum punishment possible.

Sheriff Ivey proudly bragged in his video that when Perry arrived at the sheriff’s department, he personally escorted the handcuffed animal-abuser into lockup.

“The abuse of this innocent pet makes absolutely no sense and can only be attributed to someone who has zero compassion for animals and quite frankly shouldn’t be allowed to even own a plant, much less a pet,” the sheriff said. “As I’ve said many times before, anyone who can do something like this to an innocent pet could just as easily do it to a human. So I have zero remorse about locking her up or sympathy for any excuse she may have for her actions.”

“Just in case you did not get the previous bulletins I’ve put out about animal cruelty, let me be clear,” Sheriff Ivey warned. “If you harm an animal in Brevard County, we’re gonna put your butt straight in jail and do everything legally possible to make your life just as miserable as you made that pet’s life.”

“If in your sick little mind, you’re thinking about harming an animal, or a human for that matter, I would highly recommend that you don’t do it,” he said. “But if for some reason you can’t control yourself, you better do it somewhere other than Brevard County because in this county we take animal abuse very serious, and personal for that matter.”

God bless you Sheriff Ivey! Sadly, there are not enough out there like you, sir, who helpless, abused animals have as an advocate. I so hope that poor dog has a flood of applicants to give it the loving life it deserves, forever here.

I think CPS should look into what conditions that child is living under & being exposed to. Doing that right in front of her is incomprehensible!
And obviously on a hot day, why is the child wearing full pink tights? What may they be covering up?

There is a special place in hell for people who abuse children & animals. There were better ways for her to handle this. Obviously this woman has poor decision making skills.

Well said Sheriff! I also noticed when she put the dog into the trunk, she picked the dog up by the collar on the dog's neck. Thank God that dog is now in caring hands.

"...she tried to turn her family pet in to an animal shelter because she couldn’t care for it anymore" She admitted to this shelter that she couldn't take care of dog. "the shelter said it was completely full and had no room for the dog." There must be alot of animal abuse in Brevard County when this shelter is full. Do the right thing and take care of the dog. Brevard County Sheriff must have nothing better to do than shine his own buckle in public.

There are many other options for rehoming a pet other than the easy shelter drop off. She apparently did not only want to make the effort to properly care for and feed the poor dog, neither did she want to make an effort to try and adopt out the dog to a new home or contact dog rescues in her area. So the next easy way to dump the dog was in her trunk to die! Sadly, many shelters are full and overwhelmed! But not everybody who surrenders a pet to a shelter has abused the pet! This Sheriff rocks! If this shines his buckle, he totally deserves it! And that woman deserves what she gets! Wish we all had a sheriff like him!

Put her in a trunk and leave her.

Too bad they can't stick her sorry ass in a car trunk in hot Florida heat for a while.

I don’t know why she put the dog in the trunk. Perhaps she’s an idiot. But they’ll nurse the dog back to good health, and because they follow proper procedure, they could end up euthanizing the dog. If it was an almost full term baby, they can legally kill it in many states. Makes no sense.

Why doesn't the shelter have a list of rescues? They should have been much more proactive knowing this woman was desperate and called a rescue! Wth? More than one person is at fault here, The lack of space at the Brevard county shelter and the strict law means they need to expand the shelter!! Don't have a shelter that discourages people from dropping off their UNWANTED pets! Geeez!
