Woman Opens Fire On Home Invaders, Police Find One Dead In Nearby Ditch
Lithia, FL – A woman opened fire on two suspects who broke into her home on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred in the 100-block of Old Welcome Road at approximately 9 p.m. on Oct. 30, Spectrum News reported.
The homeowners – a woman and a man – were inside the home when two suspects forced their way inside and “made demands of them,” Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Major Frank Losat told the Tampa Bay Times.
The attackers began pistol whipping and striking the male, so the woman grabbed her legally-owned firearm and discharged a single round.
The bullet hit one of the suspects, and deputies later found him dead in a nearby ditch, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
The second attacker escaped in a vehicle, and has not yet been apprehended by the authorities.
Police were searching for the suspect using K9s and an aviation unit, but it was unclear whether or not his identity was known to the authorities.
“I would encourage if any of the neighbors see any suspicious vehicles or anybody walking around the neighborhood that they do not recognize to please call 911,” Maj. Losat told Spectrum News. "Do not approach this person, as they might be armed. If any vehicles are sitting in your driveway that does not look familiar, please call us."
The male homeowner was rushed to a local hospital where he was listed in stable condition, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
Police said that the home invasion was not random, and that they believe the suspects specifically targeted the couple.
“It’s a little bit scary knowing it’s so close to home,” neighbor Ginger Akins told WTVT. “They’re on my same easement.”
“For the most part, you never have any problems,” Akins added.
