Woman Fatally Shoots Knife-Wielding Estranged Husband During Home Invasion
McCleary, WA – A woman fatally shot her estranged, knife-wielding husband after he broke into her home on Wednesday night.
The 36-year-old woman, identified only as Aubrey, had a domestic violence protection order against her 47-year-old estranged husband at the time of the attack, KOMO reported.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:25 p.m. at a residence in the 400-block of West Elma Hicklin Road, the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office said.
After the suspect forced his way into the home, he was confronted by his estranged wife’s 60-year-old male friend, KOMO reported.
During the physical altercation that ensued, Aubrey “was able to shoot the suspect,” with a handgun, fatally wounding him, Grays Harbor Undersheriff Brad Johansson said.
Aubrey said that her friend was being attacked, and that she had no choice but to open fire.
“If it’s your life or theirs, you do what you have to do,” she told KOMO.
“Life is precious. Rage is real,” she explained, referring to the reason why she had filed for divorce and requested the protection order earlier this fall. “Cherish every moment of life.”
The 60-year-old friend was able to grab onto the attacker’s arm in order to keep him from slicing or stabbing him with the blade, and he suffered no significant injuries during the altercation, KOMO reported.
The investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing, but Aubrey has not been charged in connection with the incident.
Undersheriff Johansson said the situation appears to be a case of self-defense.
“At this point that nothing seems out of the ordinary,” he told KOMO. " It appears that the male subject entered the residence forcibly and the home owner protected herself.”
