Woman Attacks Retired NYPD Cop Wearing Birthday Hat, Mistaken For MAGA Hat
Nashville, TN – A woman punched a retired New York Police Department (NYPD) detective in the face when she didn’t like his red had that said “Make Fifty Great Again.”
The hat – a birthday gift from his wife who had surprised him with the trip to Nashville – was a play on the Make American Great Again (MAGA) hats worn by supporters of President Donald Trump, the New York Post reported.
He was also wearing a shirt with an American flag on it emblazoned with the words “Making America Great Since 1970.”
Retired NYPD Detective Daniel Sprague told the New York Post he was celebrating his birthday with his wife and friend at The Stage on Broadway on Friday evening when a woman he did not know slugged him.
“I was outside with my friends when some grabbed me from behind, spun me around, and punched me in the face,” Sprague said. “At first I thought it was a friend until I got hit. I couldn’t believe someone could get that upset.”
The bar tossed both Sprague and the woman who hit him off the premises without giving the victim an opportunity to call the police, the New York Post reported.
But Sprague reported the incident to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department on Saturday morning.
Nashville police confirmed they had taken the report, the New York Post reported.
“Suspect grabbed his hat from his head and punched him in the face. He stated that when the suspect hit him in the face, he did not hit her back,” the police report read.
Sprague said he was shocked when the woman attacked him, the New York Post reported.
He said he’d gotten a variety of reactions through the night but none of them had been aggressive or violent.
“All night people were giving me thumbs up, smiles or some showing rage, until they walked up close and saw what hat said,” Sprague said. “Then they would wish me a happy birthday.”
The former police detective said he was baffled by the hatred he encountered, the New York Post reported.
“I love Trump, but I wouldn’t hit someone who had a Bernie hat on,” Sprague said. “Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I wasn’t an Obama fan but if he walked into a place where I was, I would show him and the office respect.”
Sprague retired from the elite Emergency Service Unit of NYPD in 2009, the New York Post reported.
The former law enforcement officer wrote a Facebook post about the experience, complete with close-up pictures of his bloodied face that said he was waiting to hear back from Nashville detectives.
The Facebook post has since been deleted.
