Witness: Teen Pointed Gun At Cop Before She Was Shot; Now Family Demands Justice

A replica Beretta handgun was found next to 17-year-old Hannah Linn Williams' body after the fatal shooting.

Anaheim, CA – A 17-year-old girl armed with a replica Beretta 92 FS handgun was fatally shot by a Fullerton police officer after a collision with the patrol car Friday night.

The incident began at approximately 7 p.m., when a uniformed, on-duty Fullerton Police Department (FPD) officer spotted a vehicle traveling “at a high rate of speed” on the eastbound 91 Freeway, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said in a press release on Tuesday.

The officer was taking his K9 partner to a veterinarian for a medical procedure at the time.

The teen’s vehicle and the officer’s patrol SUV “made physical contact” at some point during the encounter, but police and prosecutors have released few other details about what led up to the altercation.

The suspect’s family members identified her as 17-year-old Hannah Linn Williams, according to The Orange County Register.

A witness said she saw Williams standing outside her vehicle on the freeway with her arms raised and a gun in her hand.

The witness said that Williams was walking towards the officer at the time.

Another witness said that the object Williams was holding was a cell phone, not a gun.

“An officer-involved shooting occurred and a replica Beretta 92 FS handgun was recovered at the scene next to the female,” the district attorney’s office said in the press release. “The gun was later identified as a replica handgun designed to look like a real Beretta 92 FS.”

A witness reported having heard the crash, followed by two gunshots, KTLA reported.

Williams was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her gunshot wounds.

The district attorney’s office is handling the ongoing investigation into the fatal officer-involved shooting, The Orange County Register reported.

Williams’ family’s spokesperson, Reverend Jarrett Maupin, said that police and prosecutors are lying about the teen being in possession of a weapon, and that even if she was armed, the officer shouldn’t have opened fire because the gun was only a replica.

“We maintain that she was unarmed,” Maupin said during a press conference on Tuesday, according to the Orange County Register.

“A fake gun is a fake gun,” he declared.

Maupin alleged that the replica firearm was not found next to the teen’s body, and that police didn’t find the weapon until they searched the inside of the rental vehicle Williams was driving.

Family friend Magda Rojas said that there was no way Williams was armed with a “real gun” when she was shot, KTLA reported.

“Maybe a Mickey Mouse gun or something, but not a real gun,” Rojas said. “We don’t have no clue. We don’t have real answers.”

It is against the law to possess a replica handgun in the state of California, KCBS reported.

Her family said that the officer-involved shooting “appears to be another unjustified shooting of a young person of color.”

Williams' mother is Latina and her father is black, according to The Orange County Register.

Williams’ father, Benson Williams, has called on Rev. Al Sharpton to become involved in his daughter’s case, Heavy reported.

“We want Rev. Sharpton to shine a light on what happened here in Anaheim. We want to know why police felt the need to shoot and kill a 17-year-old unarmed teen girl,” he said in a statement. “We want the public to know, right away, how many times our daughter was shot and whether or not she was shot in the back.”

Williams’ sister, Nyla, has also reached out to California Senator Kamala Harris and Vice President Joe Biden on Twitter.

“We need your help. My 17 yr sister was just shot and killed by the Fullerton police we have no answer we have been told several different things this happened Friday evening on the 91 here in Anaheim please please,” Nyla’s tweets read.

Williams’ godmother, activist Lynnette Campbell, said that the high school senior was hard-working and honest, The Orange County Register reported.

“As of today, we still do not have clear answers about what happened to Hannah,” Campbell said. “The information that we have received from the police department has changed several times.”

A spokesperson for the district attorney’s office said that dashcam and bodycam footage of the altercation will not be immediately released, as video is normally released after their investigation is complete.

The family has authorized an independent autopsy, and has also asked California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office to have the state attorney general’s office investigate the officer-involved shooting.

“We cannot trust local police to investigate themselves,” Maupin told reporters.

The family has also demanded that the officer involved in the altercation be suspended without pay.

While the district attorney’s office investigates the officer’s potential criminal culpability, the Anaheim Police Department will determine whether or not Williams had committed a crime, KMBZ reported.

FPD will conduct an administrative investigation to determine whether the officer acted in accordance with department policy.

Roll dashcam.

Also, are the police basically saying here that they tried to run her off of the road in a POV? That is what it sounds like they are dancing around.

And, of course, it should be investigated (preferably by the FBI) as to whether the replica gun was throw down.

Officer might have acted correctly here, but it is far, far too early to say. In what little we know, some of the details are suspicious.

Another "hard working" good student story she was just playing with the officers my daughter wouldn't do that. & how was the officer supposed to know that it was a fake gun she got what she deserved live by the sword die by the sword plain & simple

I'm still confused re: "person of color." I can't agree with racial profiling on this one. Also, I would never want to be put in the position our police are when a 'gun' is present. Thank you, to our men and women in blue for doing a job most of us would NEVER have the guts to take on! You are appreciated.

The Rev. Maupin mentioned is from Phoenix. He ran for Mayor and ended up being charged and convicted for felonies involving election violations. He, being a Reverend, should have known better than to break the law??? He is also a protege of the Rev. Sharpton and employs many of the same tactics and methods. Not surprising that he is involved elsewhere since his ability to sway people in Arizona is much diminished since he is a convicted felon.

Never have anything in your hands if LEO says hands up! No way to tell if a replica gun is not real when at a distance and the officer said she was walking towards him. Why is this about race when she is a fair skinned blonde? Article said her mother is Latina and father black. Can’t tell that from looking at her. It’s always the race card.

What a bunch of crap. The "reverend" believes she should not have been shot because it was only a replica gun? He is a terminally stupid moron. Maybe he needs to do a ride along in the ghetto and see how he would handle being on the business end of a replica...or maybe not a replica. Officer go home and subject doesn't. Works so well for me.

Knowing that it is against law to have replica gun why did this girl have it to begin with...Those ridiculous statements about being shot because she was person of color doesn't wash because she looks caucasion and police couldn't know her parents were Latina and black...Calling on cop hater like Sharpton make it look like family is looking for a payday...

I don't know what the real story is..but THIS is the dumbest statement ever made "and that even if she was armed, the officer shouldn’t have opened fire because the gun was only a replica." Now how in HELL would an officer or anyone else know the gun is a replica??? Do you wait until you are shot...or not. Ridiculous statement.

white color? her dad is black and mom hispanic. dad must be stepdad. biological dad could be white. mom a white hispanic. so the cop knew immediately that she was a creole and thought to himself, "Hmmm, I wanna shoot this white looking black-hispanic girl because she's a person of color."

The parents want to blame someone for this loss of life, they need only look in the mirror. Had they taught their daughter to respect and obey instructions of a Police Officer this event might not have happened. As the investigation by the District Attorney is likely to show, the girl pointed a weapon at the Police Officer and he was more than justified in using deadly force. Of course, the biased parents will never agree to those findings. Why did the girl do what she did? We may never know that. Moral of this story is don't resist arrest unless you want your butt kicked and never point a weapon or replica weapon at an Officer if you do not want to leave this world.

It's funny every time a black teen is killed by a police officer despite what they were doing to cause it you see all the usual people running toward the spotlight. Like Al Sharpton and the Black Loves Money group. All screaming injustice. If these people would raise their kids and keep up with what they're doing and who they're doing it with. And drill into them they have no reason to be around a gun of any kind real or fake. Then maybe their kids would live to a ripe old age. But with their hero's being rappers singing about packing a 9 (9MM) and they constantly talk about killing police officer's like it's a badge of honor. They see them and gangs as heroes in movies they watch and video games they play. So to look cool to their friends they start carrying a gun. Be it real or fake doesn't matter because any moron knows that police are being killed in record numbers so are being extra careful. So if someone pulls out a gun they have just done the stupidest thing in their life and it has cost them their life. Instead of all these protest rallies so they can be seen on TV. They need to be at home sitting their kids down and telling them the police officer was just doing his job. And that the teen having a gun or gun lookalike had died because he wanted to play baby-gangsta. But they're to busy trying to find anything to bitch about to make the police look bad. Then they can use it to excuse their own bad behavior.

Don't ever point a gun, real or replica, at a cop. You will end up making an early exit from this world. Looks like someone is going after the ghetto lottery, even though the girl is lily white.🤔

OK, I am not going to touch the 'color' issue. If there is a body and dash cam video, then her family is not going to have a foot to stand on. Even one witness described her as holding a 'gun' in her raised hands. I'm sorry for their loss, but if I were that officer and I couldn't tell if the gun she had was real or not, I would have probably responded the same way. It's not like she let him inspect it prior to the shooting. And, I'm the guy that hopes and prays that I never have to use my duty weapon.

There are distinct differences between a toy gun and a replica gun. The replica is made to look and feel exactly like the real thing. There is no way to tell a replica from the real thing unless you are holding it in your hand of are within a couple inches of it. Play stupid games and win stupid prizes.

What doesn't surprise me is the racist response from the family calling the chief racist agitator. In my opinion she committed a cop assisted suicide.

You cannot tell the difference between fake and real except for a colored end of the barrel if that is in place. She does not look like a person of color, she looks white to me. The officer was protecting his life in his mind. The officer is traumatized also.

Here we go again...the clairvoyence and ESP of police being called into question again because an idiot who points a replica of a real weapon, gets shot and killed, and now it's the officer's fault he couldn't determine, from a distance, said weapon was a fake. 28 LEOS are dead this year because of the same scenario except the weapons were real.

I just seen the body cam and dashcam videos and the girl was in a shooting stance holding the gun towards the officer and she was asked to drop the gun. She still kept it pointing it at him and was walking towards him and she refused to comply with a lawful order to drop the gun. Her family says she had depression and a wish to die. Death by cop was her intention. She was speeding and crashed into the officer's cruiser then she comes out of her SUV in a shooting stance holding the gun toward the officer and advancing towards the officer as he backed away from her ducking behind the SUVs door for cover. When she did not follow his commands he shot her. 16 year olds are perfectly capable of pulling a trigger. He had no way to know if it was "fake". She commited suicide by cop. I feel bad for the officer who has to live with the knowledge that he shot twice at a young girl who was basically unarmed but faked being armed. One shot hit her in the chest and the other hit her leg. He immediately tried to save her by tying his belt to stop the leg from bleeding out and put a gauze on the site of the chest hit as she pleaded for him to help her. Even a passerby tried to tell her she would be ok and "stay with us" as she slowly got weaker and she even apologized for what she did to the officer before becoming unconscious and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Very sad but who gave her permission to walk around with a fake gun? Parents? Never point and threaten a police officer with a fake gun. You are asking to be shot and possibly killed such as what happened here. She probably had à death wish seeing she suffered with depression and suicidal thoughts. Police officer acted just and should be exonorated.

Her parents called 911 to report their daughter missing and that she was suicidal around the same time as she intentionally hit the Police vehicle, exited her own SUV took a "shooting stance" and pointed the gun at the officer as he rounded her SUV. She got what she wanted. Unfortunately she used an innocent LEO to do it.

I have encountered these so called replica's and trust me on one occasion if the kid had pulled it out from under the drivers seat like he was wanting to I would caped him right then and there. It was a replica 1911 pellet pistol and it was nighttime. I told him 2 times not to reach for it and the fool still moved his hand toward it until he felt my 45 next to his ear. Touch it and the lights were out for good. This was a good shoot in my books.

Hmm -- What was a 17 years old doing in a RENTAL Car ?? Very few will even rent to someone under 21 years old. What was she doing SPEEDING around -- Endangering others lives ? Why would she get out of the car and walk towards the Police car ?? What was she doing with even a "Fake ~ Replica" of a Gun ? "Williams’ father, Benson Williams, has called on Rev. Al Sharpton to become involved in his daughter’s case" So what is this Worthless POS TAX DODGER (MILLIONS OF DOLLARS __ WHY ISN"T HE IN PRISON ??) "Her family said that the officer-involved shooting “appears to be another unjustified shooting of a young person of color.”" -- She looks pretty damn WHITE to me from the photo ~~ Summery: Guessing she had MENTAL problems and chose to End her life -- Suicide by Cop -- now this officer has to live with her decision -- and for the Family just looking for a Ghetto Payout !! A fake gun is NOT a fake gun if it looks just like the real thing. Also, If that picture is really of the girl, there is no way this can be made into a "racist cop" story. The girl got justice for pulling an apparent weapon on a law enforcement officer. I don't know of any cop who would be able to tell a replica Beretta from a real gun if it didn't have the legally required red or orange tips that separate fake guns from the real thing.

More parents trying to profit from the wrongdoing of their kid. Just like in Ferguson when Michael Brown was shot and killed, justifiably, as was this kid. You don't point a weapon, real or fake, at an officer doing his job, and expect him not to shoot you.
