Nashville, TN - An arrest has been made in the fatal stabbing of 23-year-old nurse Tiffany Ferguson. Christopher McLawhorn, 24, an area homeless man, has been charged with the murder.
In the early morning hours of February 28, the roommate of Tiffany Ferguson woke up to her screaming in their shared condo. She called 911 and found Tiffany covered in stab wounds and their front door open. Tiffany was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she died from her injuries.
Security footage of the complex showed a man attempting to break in to cars in the parking lot before beginning his search of unlocked doors of the residences. Police believe he entered through an unlocked door and stole items, leaving with them and returning for more when he turned violent and attacked Tiffany Ferguson.
“From what we can tell at this moment, this does appear to be a random act,” a police spokesman said during an initial news conference.
The search for the man on the security footage in a hooded sweatshirt continued through the week when police began narrowing in on a suspect. According to WKRN McLawhorn became a person of interest early on in the investigation.
He was picked up one morning around 4:40 AM and was found with two bottles of liquor and a small amount of marijuana. He has been booked on charges including criminal homicide and especially aggravated burglary in connection with the murder of Tiffany Ferguson. According to WKRN he also has charges pending out of Wilson County, North Carolina.
Tiffany Ferguson was a "rising star" in her hospital Saint Thomas West Hospital, where she was admitted to residency right out of college. Her family and co-workers are in shock over the tragic incident.
One pastor spoke of Tiffany after the murder, “She had a sweet spirit and a giving heart. She loved people and she loved life. I am going to tell you, I don’t know that I have ever had anything that affected me personally any more than this — that someone goes in and for so little monetary value takes the life of someone else.”
Christopher McLawhorn is believed to be suicidal in jail, but the corrections officers won't let this coward escape justice that easily; they are keeping him on suicide watch.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Tiffany Ferguson's family and all of her colleagues at Saint Thomas West Hospital. A true servant that was taken from this world too soon. Rest in peace Tiffany.
