New York City, NY - James Jackson grew up hating black people. On Friday, he decided to act on his hatred and he went to New York intent on murdering black people. He was arrested after he stabbed 66-year-old can collector, Timothy Caughman, to death on Monday.
james Jackson had made statements about wanting to kill black people in the "media capital of the world", New York City.
On Friday, he boarded a bus in Maryland where he lived and came to New York City, according to The New York Post.
Sources told police that Jackson particularly didn't like blacks who dated white women. William Aubry, Assistant Chief of Manhattan South Detectives, said that Jackson "wanted to make a statement."
He used a 26-inch sword to attack and repeatedly stab Timothy Caughman in the chest and back as he was digging through the trash. The incident occurred at about 11:30 PM Monday near the corner of Ninth Avenue and West 36th Street.
Witnesses told police that they heard Timothy Caughman yell "what are you doing," and "get off me."
After he was stabbed, Timothy Caughman stumbled into the Midtown South Station for help.
James Jackson went to a nearby restaurant and washed the blood off in the restroom.
Timothy Caughman was taken to a local hospital for treatment but later died. Assistant Chief Aubry said that the attack was "random" and "clearly racially motivated."
Jackson, age 28, turned himself in at an NYPD substation in Times Square shortly after midnight Wednesday, and told police that he believed he would kill again if he wasn't arrested. He also told police that the attack on Timothy Caughman happened after he became angry when he saw an interracial couple together.
James Jackson was charged with Murder on Wednesday. He told police that he ditched the weapon, a small sword, in Washington Square Park.
Jackson was seen on surveillance video earlier on Monday stalking another black man near the location of the attack.
Timothy Caughman had been living in a transitional home and was a self-proclaimed autograph collector and can and bottle recycler.
Jackson is an Army veteran, and was honorably discharged in 2012. By his words and actions, he is a white supremacist, although no formal connection to any known group has been found.
This low-life has forfeited his right to ever walk free in society again. It would be a terrible injustice if he was sentenced to anything short of life in prison without parole.
What do you think his sentence should be? We'd like to hear from you. Please let us know in the comments.
