Walmart Stops Selling Handgun Ammo, Bans Open Carry In Stores

Walmart asked customers to no longer open carry in its stores and will stop selling ammo for handguns and some rifles

Bentonville, AR – Walmart said Tuesday it will no longer sell ammunition for handguns and some rifles, and has also asked customers to not openly carry firearms in stores even in states that allow it.

Walmart announced that handgun ammunition, .223, and 5.56 NATO would no longer be sold in its stores after they sell out according to the Associated Press.

Walmart also stated it would discontinue handgun sales in Alaska. The retail corporation had stopped selling handguns in the U.S. except for Alaska in the 1990s, according to the Associated Press.

The retail giant said it would be adding signs in stores to tell customers about about their policy change which prohibits concealed carry.

Walmart noted it would not change its policy that allows for customers to carry concealed weapons.

“We have a long heritage as a company of serving responsible hunters and sportsmen and women, and we’re going to continue doing so,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a memo given to employees on Sept. 3, according to the Associated Press. “We encourage our nation’s leaders to move forward and strengthen background checks and to remove weapons from those who have been determined to pose an imminent danger.”

McMillon added he would write letters to the White House and Congress and ask for “action on these common sense measures.”

In August, a man went into an El Paso, Texas Walmart and killed 22 people with an AK-47 style rifle.

Texas became an open carry state in 2016 which means people can openly carry firearms in that state, according to the Associated Press.

It's still illegal to openly carry a weapon while murdering people.

“Walmart deserves enormous credit for joining the strong and growing majority of Americans who know that we have too many guns in our country and they are too easy to get,” said Executive Director and Founder of Guns Down America Igor Volsky, according to the Associated Press.

“That work doesn’t end with Walmart’s decision today. As Congress comes back to consider gun violence, Walmart should make it clear that it stands with Americans who are demanding real change,” he added.

Here is the letter to employees...

It includes the following...

"we are respectfully requesting that customers no longer openly carry firearms into our stores or Sam’s Clubs in states where “open carry” is permitted – unless they are authorized law enforcement officers....

As it relates to concealed carry by customers with permits, there is no change to our policy or approach."

I am a gun owner and believe everyone should own a gun. Anyone that wants one and cannot afford one, the government should provide one. It should be legal to open carry EVERYWHERE. Teachers, doctors, cashiers, gang member, drug dealers, gas station attendants, carnies, fast food workers, EVERYONE and ANYONE should be allowed to open carry, no matter the situation.

How am I supposed to interpret those two statements?

WALMART is just another left wing company bowing to bs useless gun control. 47 people shot and 7 murdered in Chicago where non felons can not get a permit. So why is it that where gun control is the toughest there are more people shot and killed every month than in syria, iraq, and Afghanistan combined? Felons don't submit to background checks, felons dont apply for pistol permits, felons are felons because they break the Law.

By WALMART stopping the sell of ammo and guns only empowers the felon.

There are 230,000 deaths from botched medical procedures and operations every yr in America. Where is the outcry?

More 3 y/o drown in pools and 5 gallon buckets than are shot every yr.

More people die in car accidents than are shot, but yet we dont ban the car.

Gun control is just the new word for confiscation.

When governmwnt tells you, you dont need a gun, you need a gun.

Communists and fascists all instituted gun registration and then confiscation. Nazi’s, communists, and dictators a like. Then the killing of the populace began.

Just ask any surviving jew from WW2.

I don't buy ammo at Walmart but all this is going to be is send those who do down the street to the Mom and Pop stores that Walmart comes in and tries to destroy. This will back fire on them as now their stores will become even more of a target. Stupid is as stupid does and Walmart will have no one to blame but themselves.

I'm not sure of the attraction of open carry other than to intimidate and instigate. I think Walmart is messing up big time by putting their two cents in the political game. Open carrying does the exact opposite of what these people are saying they are trying to do... Just like the "first amendment crowd" that instigates confrontation with a camera

It is there right to sell whatever they want. If you don't like their policy, don't shop there. It's that simple.

A wise man told me that if you ignore the ignorant they will go away. However, he states, it just takes a while for the ignorant to realize they are the ignorant. LOL 🤣😂

Those words are so true.

Thanks wise man

This is pure ignorance. The “shooter” had a gun, so no one else should be allowed to have a gun! If someone else had a gun the shooter could have been taken out much sooner! This nothing more than Liberal Gun Confiscation beginnings. Conceal Carry will be next.

Gun rights activists test Walmart request not to open-carry guns into store

"David Amad, the vice president of Open Carry Texas, told The New York Times the 38,000 members of his group have openly carried their guns inside Walmart stores since the retailer announced last week it is “respectfully requesting” customers to no longer openly bring guns into its stores.

He said none of the members who have done so have been asked to leave.

“They are ducking the issue,” Amad told the Times. “They are trying to get the gun haters to leave them alone, while at the same time leave us alone when we carry in their stores.”
