Waco, Texas - A Waco Police Officer was critically injured after a suspect ran him down with an SUV, and dragged him down the road. The suspect was stopped when other officers opened fire.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 10:10 AM. SWAT and drug enforcement officers were attempting to serve a warrant on somebody in a vehicle. The car was stopped and an officer was walking towards the car when the driver ran him down, according to KWTX.
The officer was pinned under the car and being dragged, other officers opened fire, mortally wounding the suspect.
The other officers then had to lift the SUV off of the downed officer. He was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center with severe head injuries, multiple fractures, and is listed in critical condition.
“He’s got a long road to haul," Sergeant Patrick Swanton said. “He has multiple fractures, multiple injuries and will be recovering for quite some time.”
“We’re going to make sure the family has all the resources they need,” Chief Holt said. “We’re reminded at a time like this what our officers do on a daily basis is a very dangerous job. They do it well and I’m lucky to represent them.”
While the necessity of shooting the driver in this incident seems obvious, the shooting would have been a policy violation if it had occurred in San Francisco, which does not allow for shooting the suspect of a moving vehicle if the vehicle is the only weapon.
The shooting investigation is being handled by the Texas Rangers.
Our thoughts and prayers are with this wounded hero and his family.
