VIDEO: Would-Be Cop-Killer Gets Taken Out Before Fatal Machete Strike
Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) released bodycam video of a suspect who chased police with a machete and was fatally shot as he loomed above an officer with his long blade raised over his head (video below).
The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 25 after a man wielding a machete had just robbed an auto parts store in Hollywood, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"He walks in and goes over to the batteries and he grabs one, then he walks over to the door and he slams it on the ground and pulls out the machete and he threatens and swings it at us," AutoZone employee Juan Chaidez told KTLA. "Then he grabbed the battery and runs away."
Police said the man – later identified as 22-year-old Nathanial Pinnock - went from the robbery to a nearby Chick-fil-A restaurant on Sunset Boulevard and carjacked a drive-thru customer in a Lexus, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"As he's running with the machete, he's pretty much got the cops chasing down," witness Clinton Gunnels described the scene to KTLA.
"They kind of gave him a second to surrender, but he high-jacked a car and then the driver hops out of the car, and that's when he hopped over to the driver's seat and that's when he drove off,” Gunnels said.
The carjacking was captured on cell phone video by a witness and showed Pinnock, with a long blade, forcing himself into a vehicle in the drive-thru lane through the passenger-side door.
The video showed that officers surrounded the black Lexus, which was pulled up at the drive-thru window.
Then all of a sudden, the suspect hit the gas and tried to flee, but the video showed he slammed into two different police vehicles before he got stuck between two police SUVs.
The suspect jumped out of the Lexus and took off running with his machete in his hand and police pursued him.
LAPD released bodycam video of the incident that showed police firing less-lethal rounds at Pinnock at the Chick-fil-A drive-thru, KCAL reported.
Bodycam video showed that the officer with the less-lethal weapon chased after Pinnock.
Another cell phone video captured footage of the machete-wielding man running across the street through traffic with a police officer hot on his heels.
Then the suspect suddenly stopped short and doubled back toward the police officer and started chasing him.
Bodycam video showed Pinnock rushing at the officer with his machete.
The officer drew his duty weapon and fired at his attacker but missed.
And that didn’t stop the suspect, who was raising his arm above his head with the long knife to attack the officer.
The officer turned and fled from the suspect, running into the street to get away, the video showed.
But then the officer tripped and fell to the pavement and a split-second later, the suspect was looming above him with the machete.
That’s when the cell phone video showed other officers opened fire on the suspect before he could bring the machete down on the officer.
The bodycam footage showed the officer was on the ground and Pinnock was above him with the knife a split second before another officer fatally shot him.
The officer was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries to his arm and knee.
Pinnock was taken to the hospital and died, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The officer-involved shooting is still under investigation, KCAL reported.
