VIDEO: Suspect Charges At 3 Different Officers, Injures 2 Before Shooting
Las Vegas, NV - The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) released bodycam video of a man who attacked two officers before he was shot at McCarran International Airport (video below).
The incident occurred at about 3:30 a.m. on Nov 19. when police responded to a report about a door breach behind a ticket counter with a suspect who was moving through two terminals, KSNV reported.
The first arriving officer, LVMPD Sgt. Jason Hanson, checked in with an airport employee on the tarmac who pointed the officer toward the exterior entrance of Delta’s baggage facility.
Inside the facility, the sergeant encountered 32-year-old Jordan Henry, who was carrying a shopping bag in one hand and a full, unopened can of soda in the other, according to LVMPD Assistant Sheriff Charles Hank, who met with reporters on Saturday.
Initially, Sgt. Hanson told Henry that he couldn’t be in that area and offered to show him “how to get back to the other side.”
Bodycam video showed that as the sergeant walked Henry toward the building’s exit, a second officer arrived on the scene.
That’s when Sgt. Hanson went to take Henry into custody, but the suspect wasn’t having any of it.
“The officer standing next to Henry attempted to grab Henry’s arm to conduct a pat-down, causing Henry to aggressively pull away from the officers grasp. Henry then let out a scream,” Sheriff Hank described that bodycam video to reporters.
The video showed that about three seconds after the arriving officer got out of his car, Henry charged at him full force.
He knocked the officer to the ground and caused him to lose consciousness for a brief period, but the bodycam showed that Henry never even stopped to see what he had done as he fled across the pavement at full speed.
A third officer who arrived on the scene helped Sgt. Hanson chase Henry through the airport’s exterior and caught up with him near a row of parked airport utility vehicles, the video showed.
When the officers approached, bodycam video showed that Henry charged and lunged at the third officer, much in the same way that he did the other officer he had left bleeding and unconscious on the ground.
The third officer deployed a Taser at Henry but it did nothing to stop the enraged suspect, the video showed.
“The Taser was ineffective and Henry punched the officer in the face causing him to fall to the ground,” Sheriff Hank said.
Henry knocked the third officer to the ground and then began to flee, yet again, before Sgt. Hanson drew his duty weapon.
“Get down! Get down! Get down!” Sgt. Hanson commanded Henry.
But the bodycam video showed that the suspect ignored the sergeant’s commands and instead, turned toward him and began to lunge.
“Now he’s coming at Sgt. Hanson,” Sheriff Hank explained to reporters. “Sgt. Hanson gave Henry commands to get on the ground.”
Henry was still rushing at Sgt. Hanson when the 20-year veteran of the police force opened fire and shot him twice in the torso, KSNV reported.
The suspect was transported to the hospital where he remained in stable but critical condition.
Sheriff Hank said the first officer that Henry attacked had suffered a broken nose, orbital fracture to the area surrounding his eye, and a fractured finger.
He said that the investigation had determined that the suspect was not a ticketed passenger for any of the airport’s airlines.
Henry is facing multiple charges of battery on a protected person resulting in substantial bodily harm, battery on a protected person and trespass, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
The sheriff said his criminal history included arrests in Georgia for criminal trespass, two counts of battery against a police officer, and obstructing a police officer by use of threats or violence.
Sgt. Hanson has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is protocol for officer-involved shootings.
