A student at Edmond Santa Fe High School was assaulted for wearing a MAGA hat and Trump 2020 flag to a spirit day.

Edmond, OK – An 18-year-old student at Edmond Santa Fe High School was caught on video assaulting a younger student who was wearing a red Make American Great Again (MAGA) hat and a Trump 2020 flag (video below).

Students were celebrating the first day of Santa Fe’s Double Wolf Dare Week, an annual fundraising activity for a charity, when the incident occurred in the school hallway, KTUL reported.

As part of the fundraising festivities, students can pay a dollar a day to wear hats to school.

The incident began just after 9 a.m. on Monday morning when 18-year-old Kenneth Dewayne Jones saw a student walk into the school wearing a USA sweatshirt with American flag sleeves, a red MAGA baseball cap, and a Trump 2020 campaign flag as a cape, according to the police report provided to Blue Lives Matter by the Edmond Police Department.

The student’s father is a reserve police officer with the nearby Crescent Police Department.

Patrolman Roberson, and his wife Crystal, told Blue Lives Matter that their 17-year-old son was dressed for a special black light event at school that day, and had chosen his costume specifically because he thought it would glow.

Jones was wearing a high-visibility safety vest during the altercation for the same reason.

The younger student told police he had just entered the school building through the entrance by the main gym building, and walked past Jones who was sitting on a bench, according to the police report.

“As I walked past, he asked me, ‘Are you proud to wear that flag?’” the student told police.

The student answered in the affirmative, and proceeded to a classroom to talk to a teacher about something, his parents told Blue Lives Matter.

When he left the classroom, Jones approached him and said “Stop, let me talk to you for a minute,” according to the police report.

Patrolman Roberson said his son had no idea that situation was going to turn violent.

“He told me, ‘Dad, I thought he was going to start a conversation with me,’” his father told Blue Lives Matter.

But the setup began before that.

Surveillance video reviewed by police showed Jones asked another friend to videotape the altercation he was about to initiate, according to the police report filed with the Edmonds Police Department.

The student who filmed Jones’ attack on the younger student said Jones asked her to video it with her cell phone “just in case he made any false accusations,” the police report said.

“I agreed to stop, and the individual approached me. He then told a nearby girl to come over and record this. He came closer go me and asked, ‘Why are you wearing that flag?’ I responded by saying, ‘It is whiteout day and it matches. I felt like wearing it,” the victim told police.

The video, which was posted to social media, showed Jones approaching the student and blocking his path down the hallway, according to the Enid News & Eagle.

“Take it off, or I can rip it off,” Jones told him. “Do you want me to rip it off?”

Then he grabbed hold of the younger student’s flag and tugged.

The younger student’s responses cannot be understood on the video, but he described the altercation to the police.

“He then said something [to] the effect of, well I’m going to need you to take that off. I declined and said that I did not want to, nor did I have to. He then threatened me and said that if I did not take it off, he would assault me and take it,” the student told police.

The victim told police that when he refused to remove his hat despite the older boy’s threats, Jones began cursing at him and grabbed his flag.

The video showed the two boys in a tug-o-war for the Trump flag.

Then, without letting go of the flag, Jones reached over and slapped the baseball cap off the younger student’s head, causing it to hit the ground.

The student bent to retrieve his cap, and when he stood back up, Jones became very aggressive, the video showed.

The victim told police that he warned Jones that he would go to the school resource officer (SRO) if he did not stop attacking him, but Jones replied that he did not care.

The video showed another student passing by tried to step in and intervene, but Jones was having none of the peacemaking efforts, the video showed.

The younger student told his parents that he tried to de-escalate the situation.

He said he was asking Jones, “If I take it off, will you leave me alone?” but that Jones tore the flag off him mid-sentence.

“I’m going to beat your a--,” Jones told the student, according to his parents.

Jones roughly yanked the Trump flag from the younger student’s grasp and threw it on the ground, and then stepped on it as he stalked away, the video showed.

The cellphone video ended there, but the younger student’s parents said the incident continued, and was captured on the school’s surveillance cameras.

“At the end of the video, [Jones] continued cussing and yelling and grabbing the flag. Then he picked it up off the ground and balled it up and threw it in the trashcan,” Patrolman Roberson told Blue Lives Matter.

Their son immediately reported the incident to the SRO, who reviewed the surveillance video and then spoke to all of the involved parties before writing his report.

However, the school did not contact the victim’s parents.

“It happened about 9:15 a.m., and around 11 a.m. our son called us and told us what had taken place,” Crystal Roberson told Blue Lives Matter. “And of course, as we always do, we started heading to the school. That’s how we were notified – by our son. We talked with the school about that and they said there were some mistakes made and we should have been notified.”

The school resource officer issued Jones a municipal court summons to appear on the offense of assault and battery, according to the Enid News & Eagle.

According to the police report, Jones called his father after the altercation in the presence of the school resource officer and said he had done something wrong.

Edmond Police Spokeswoman Jenny Wagnon told Blue Lives Matter that because the misdemeanor didn’t happen in the presence of officers, they can only issue the summons, despite having clear video of the incident.

“How the summons works is that the student who is an adult, who was given the municipal summons, and the parents of the other student in the hat — those parents will have to contact the city attorney’s office within five days,” Wagnon explained to the Enid News & Eagle. “And then both parties will meet with the city attorney and try to work something out. If not, then it’s up to the city attorney to file the assault charges against the student who is an adult.”

The police report indicated that the victim’s father told the SRO that he wanted to file charges.

“He admitted that he was wrong to the school resource officer. He actually asked for a meeting with me one on one outside of school and outside of the police department – perhaps to offer and apology and to ask us not to press charges,” Patrolman Roberson told Blue Lives Matter. “My wife and I declined and we are going to pursue charges.”

The parents said they think officials were trying to minimize the impact of the situation on the school and Jones.

Jones was suspended later on Monday but the school didn’t actually enforce the suspension, according to the victim’s parents.

“The school told us [Jones] was suspended for three to five days on the day the incident occurred – but the same day he was suspended, he went to an after-school dance and they didn’t do anything about that,” Crystal Roberson said.

But she said that she and her husband had met with Edmonds Santa Fe Principal Jason Hayes on Tuesday and were pleased with the outcome of that meeting.

The mother also said her son is back in school wearing his MAGA hat again, and plans to pay a $1 a day for the fundraiser to wear it all week long.

She said he didn’t don the red cap to start a controversy.

“He just thought it would be fun and he supports his President regardless of who it is, and he wanted to show his patriotism and his support for his country,” Crystal Roberson explained.

The victim, whose name has been withheld at the request of his parents, is a senior at Edmond Santa Fe, and has a voracious interest in politics.

“He has the Constitution and the First Amendment framed on his wall – he’s got the American flag on the wall,” his mother told Blue Lives Matter.

His parents said he’s a smart and interesting kid who has already been accepted to his first choice college.

“He believes everybody has the right to believe what they want to believe. He may not agree with you but he’ll allow you to have your own ideas and opinions,” Patrolman Roberson said.

The parents said they aren’t angry with the school but they question the mandate to consider mediation prior to having charges filed against Jones.

“My biggest thing is if they would have been passing each other in the high school and the older boy had just reacted, it would have been one thing,” Patrolman Roberson said. “But it was premeditated – [Jones] asked a friend to be ready to film it.”

“The young man assaulted my child for no reason, and he needs to be accountable,” he said.

School officials have seen the disturbing video, the Enid News & Eagle reported.

“Given that hats were allowed at school yesterday as part of the week-long fundraising events, there was no specific dress code violation. The student’s choice to grab a classmate’s property and knock his hat off did, however, violate the school’s discipline policy,” the school spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

“In response, Edmond Santa Fe High School administrators, working simultaneously with Edmond Police, addressed the incident with swift and immediate disciplinary action. The school district honors students’ First Amendment rights, but must at the same time be vigilant in teaching and supporting students as they learn how best to respectfully express their opinions,” Schlepp added.

Hmmm, imagine that.

In Oregon that would've been a Robbery III, a C Felony, as a strongarm robbery. It is the use of force or threatened use of force in the unlawful taking or attempted taking of property of another. Just the attempt becomes an element of the actual robbery. The suspect in this robbery is 18, an adult. If it were my kid, I'd be pushing for the felony. This occurs all too often, with little or no sanctions, and it has to stop.

Should be expelled from school for assault.

That's assault and should be punishable in a court of law. What a damn punk.

the same demographic black player studying hard in school for "Chimpography 101".

As usual, it's protecting the violence and treating the victim as the instigator. I'm glad the parents are pressing charges. Did you notice the one person that walked away and didn't do anything? Yet, the next person tried to help. Why? What was the problem of the first person walking by? Gee...could it be because it was Black on White crime?

Funny I don't remember anyone being attacked for wearing the Hope and Change Muslim paraphernalia.

Is it a black thing? Or just ignorance on display by a leftist socialist democrat thug? Yes, press charges!

Ok. Here it is folks. Male black forciblly attacking, detaining and yelling racist slurs at someone, who is doing nothing more than expressing his first amendment right in a public school. This is a hate crime and where is the school and cops and cnn on this one?

If this was reverse the poor white kid would have his front door kicked in by dept of justice, Fbi hate crime task force, state attorney generals office and labeled a domestic terrorist by homeland security and commie demonizers southern poverty center who labels conservative thought as racist. They just payed out 3 million in settlement to muslim for malice and character Assassination.

But since its a racist act commited by black person it means nothing. And schools which run far left are afraid to approch people of color who commit racist acts. Just look at the florida parkland school shooting. Male hispanic in trouble numerous times and sheriffs office shit canned prior incidents every time leading up to the slaughter of innocent kids, so they could keep school violence stats down to get more money from dept of justice under obama.

The demographics say it all

It saddens my heart to see what the liberals are turning our country into. Young people are being led down the slippery slope and have no backbone or brains to stand up for America. Professors/teachers who are communist should not be teaching in our schools/colleges. Do the young people really want to live like the folks in Venezuela? Because that is where we are heading if they don't defend their American values. There seems to be no respect for our values, authority or each other. So so sad.

Just ANOTHER BLACK THUG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's time to bring back vigilante justice!

It is clear in todays society that apparently black people are allowed to be as racist as they want to be with no consequences. How does that work? I' m confused.🤔
