Mecca, CA - A good Samaritan citizen came to the aid of a Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy on Friday as he was being being assaulted by a suspect (video below.)
According to KMIR, the incident occurred about 10 AM at a business in the 91200 block of Second Street. Deputies responded to a report of a disturbance where a suspect Alejandro Parra De La Riva was "aggressive towards an employee and took some items without paying."
De La Riva, age 29, had left prior to the deputies' arrival but one deputy spotted a man who matched the description of the suspect. He attempted to detain him and De La Riva resisted, knocking the deputy down and appearing to try to strangle him. After a fight on the ground, the suspect got up and fled then a citizen helped the officer take him into custody (not shown in the video.)
The deputy, who was not identified, received moderate injuries, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Alejandro Parra De La Riva was not injured in the incident.
De La Riva was not injured. He was charged with suspicion of resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon, and is in custody at the Indio jail under $30,000 bond.
