Portland, OR – Mixed martial arts (MMA) champion Tara LaRosa used her grappling skills to take down a woman who allegedly initiated a brawl as LaRosa and her friends were waving American flags on an overpass in honor of veterans on Sunday (video below).
The incident occurred on the 12th Avenue Interstate 84 overpass, KGW reported.
LaRosa, 41, was in the middle of shooting a livestream video of the flag-wave event when a woman suddenly attacked a member of LaRosa’s group, according to witnesses.
“Toward the end of our day, a woman came up & started berating us,” LaRosa said in a Twitter post. “She didn’t get a reaction from me so she moved on & attacked another [woman] in our group.”
LaRosa shoved her phone into her pocket as she jumped in to subdue the combative woman.
Another clip showed the MMA champion as she sat on top of the woman and pinned her to the ground.
“Get off of me!” the woman yelled. “I am a professor!”
“It doesn’t matter! Professor’s going to jail!” a man off-camera shouted.
Some members of LaRosa’s group were wearing “Make America Great Again” hats and wore clothing bearing Proud Boys insignia, The Blaze reported.
LaRosa told members of her group to back away, then calmly told the woman beneath her to relax, one video showed.
“I can’t breathe,” the woman complained repeatedly.
“Don’t f--king attack anybody!” LaRosa told her. “If you get up, don’t attack anybody.”
The woman proceeded to tell the MMA fighter that the group was “antagonizing” the city of Portland.
LaRosa ultimately released her hold on the woman, who remained seated on the ground with her back against the overpass railing, the video showed.
“Stop f--king trying to fight,” LaRosa told her. “We’re not here trying to fight…We’re just here waving flags, celebrating Veterans’ Day.”
"You don't know what Donald Trump is!" the woman retorted. "I don't agree with Trump!"
LaRosa later pulled her phone back out of her pocket and resumed her livestream.
“I don’t know if that got caught at all, but I had to put somebody down,” she said in the video, describing the alleged attacker as a “violent woman.”
“Luckily, jiu jitsu was there – sorry man,” LaRosa explained, shrugging her shoulders. “It’s a shame it came to this. It f--king sucks. That’s not why we’re out here. It’s f--king bulls--t.”
LaRosa told police that the woman punched her between eight and 10 times, and that she bit LaRosa’s breast as she pinned her to the ground.
Photos of LaRosa’s injuries were later shared online.
No one was arrested in connection with the brawl, but police said they have forwarded the case to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, KGW reported.
“There are conflicting versions of the events, so we are gathering all of the information we can and referring it to the district attorney,” Portland Police Sergeant Kevin Allen told The Oregonian.
