Detroit, MI – Police have released terrifying surveillance video footage of a gunfight that broke out late night in a midtown Detroit restaurant (video below).
Police said the gun battle occurred at about 3:30 a.m. on July 18 when the Detroit One Coney Island restaurant was packed with as many as 30 customers after closing time at nearby nightclubs, WDIV reported.
The incident began when a man got upset because a woman he liked at the Annex club down the street refused to give him her phone number, police said.
Later, both the man and the woman ended up at Detroit One Coney Island, separately, for food after they left the Annex, according to WDIV.
Police said the man approached the woman again at Detroit One Coney Island, and tried to talk to her.
"A guy was talking with a girl, and I guess there were words exchanged about that situation," said Martin Dedvukaj, whose parents own the restaurant.
The man became enraged with the woman, and another man in the restaurant tried to intervene and defend the woman.
At that point, the angry man whipped out a handgun and shot the man defending her twice in the thigh, WDIV reported.
Dedvukaj, who witnessed the frenetic exchange, said all hell broke loose when the man started shooting.
"It was chaos in here, that's for sure," Dedvukaj said. "When the shots went off, everyone went to the floor ducking. Everyone, even the customers, went in the back of the kitchen. Yeah, it was crazy.”
That’s when a friend of the wounded man pulled out his own gun and began shooting back at his friend’s attacker, according to WDIV.
“There was a guy facing over there by the cashier and there's a guy at the door and they were shooting each other just like that," Dedvukaj said.
In the video captured by the restaurant’s surveillance cameras, people were crouched down and running for the door to escape the gunfire.
The video showed one man was backing toward the door with a gun in his right hand.
He fired three shots in quick succession before he ducked out the front door and made his escape, the video showed.
In the video, people dove to the floor behind the fleeing man to avoid the return fire.
Nobody else was hit by the flying bullets despite the fact there were as many as 30 people in Detroit One Coney Island when the gunfight broke out, WDIV reported.
Police were looking for two suspects in connection with the shooting, and released photos from surveillance video in the hopes they will be identified by the public.
One was described as light-skinned black man who was five feet eight inches to six feet tall. He had short dreadlocks and a goatee, and was wearing a black shirt and black or gray shorts, according to WDIV.
The other suspect was described as dark-complexioned black man, approximately six feet tall, with short dark hair. He was wearing all black at the restaurant, police said.
Anyone with information was asked to contact Detroit Police Department's Third Precinct at 313-596-1340 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
