VIDEO: NJ Basketball Players Brutally Attack JV Coach Who Tried To Stop Bullies

Sandy Malone

The JV basketball coach at a Newark high school was attacked and beaten after he tried to stop a bullying incident.

Newark, NJ – A junior varsity basketball coach in New Jersey was attacked and beaten by his own players on Tuesday night (video below).

The incident occurred at about 9 p.m. on Feb. 4, right after the team bus arrived back at Malcolm X. Shabazz High School in Newark after a game against Livingston, the New York Post reported.

Sources told WABC the attack occurred after the basketball coach tried to stop his players from bullying another student.

That’s when the players stopped picking on their target and turned on the JV coach instead.

Terrifying cell phone videos showed students surrounding the coach and him starting to back away, and then run, as he realized what was happening.

The video showed three players taking the coach – dressed in a white long-sleeved shirt – to the ground.

Just then, a fourth student ran up and kicked the coach.

More players joined the melee and several students kicked the coach as one student sat atop the man and started punching him, the video showed.

Bystanders yelled “stop” and “chill” as more students joined the group attacking the basketball coach.

The teen sitting on him rained down blows one after another and nobody appeared to try to stop him in the video.

The coach appeared to curl up and put his hands over his head for protection.

A student in a basketball uniform shirt bearing the number 7 repeatedly kicked the coach in the head, almost jumping on his head, as the video ended.

All of the students involved in the attack have been suspended by no arrests have been made thus far, according to WABC.

"Our detectives are investigating this incident to identify and to appropriately charge those individuals involved," Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said. "Because high school students are typically juveniles, the names of the suspects will not be released. But those found to have participated in this senseless act of violence will face criminal charges."

The mayor of Newark told WABC that he was displeased by what he saw in the video.

"I spoke to the superintendent, principal, coaches and team," Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said. "The actions of these students will not be tolerated, and they don't represent the majority of the school. The school and team have many great kids, who go on to college and do great things, and we're proud of them. We support the superintendent and principal and will do whatever we can to make the rest of the year successful."

Numerous Malcolm X. Shabazz High School students and parents called vicious attack shameful and said the students involved should be punished to the greatest extent possible.

"It's kind of embarrassing," student Nashawn Holmes told WABC. "We should be getting seen for better things, like our community, our teams."

Students said that while the basketball team melee was bad, it was not atypical of the behavior that goes on after students leave school on a daily basis.

WTF? Is it in their DNA? Or the usual poor ass parenting and no impulse control!! I hope they are expelled and are arrested!! And the coach sues each of those little thugs family. Because we all know that if the thug had gotten a scratch from the coach, the mother would already have a lawyer looking for her payday!

OMG ... this sickens me beyond words! The parents should be held accountable too. My son would never ever do something like this. It's on how they are raised as well. That poor coach! Shame on these thugs! We need to get people to gang up on them one at a time and do to them what they did to this poor coach and see just how much of a bully they are then. Through them in jail and throw away the key. They will always be this way.

Ah, my old stomping ground. South ward of Newark was always the worst part of the city.... I'm not surprised that this happened, only that no charges were filed.... I mean, it's on video, they all know what happened, and who was involved.... even if the students get expelled from that school, they will just become someone elses problem.

Clear parenting failure.... $20 says within 2 years, all involved will have criminal convictions unrelated to this incident.

And society as a whole is becoming a cesspool why? Take off the kid gloves and start treating these little shitasses as they should be treated. And please no pansy ass comments about violence begets violence. Because a good kick in the ass from mom or dad when they were younger would have stopped this from ever happening.

Again... I don’t even have to say anything about the urban youth on this one. The video speaks for itself. Poorly brought up, disrespectful, disgusting, disturbed, and disordered. It’s about time inner city leaders and urban communities realize they have a problem with lack of accountability and it isn’t because of the police.

Inner city leaders should be ashamed of themselves and their activism. I do notice that many if not all of those boys are black. Black lives matter! Especially to the police who risk their lives protecting these urban areas with many black youth. Yet so little respect they get. And it seems that pillars of the community like coaches don’t even get the respect they deserve. Urban culture is failing their children. Urban culture is turning them into monsters!

"The mayor of Newark told WABC that he was displeased by what he saw in the video." Displeased? He was "displeased" with what he saw? WTF. Have you lost your bloody mind? Kick these little assholes to the curb. And you little fucktards who watched this happen and did nothing, you too, OUT! New Jersey sounds like a hell hole if all the panty waist mayor is is "displeased". Prosecute all to the fullest. And get yourselves a new mayor.

Born in Newark and lived in Livingston as a kid. Newark was a dump back in the 60's and I'm certain it hasn't improved. What you saw in that video is not uncommon behavior. Maybe not with a team beating up the coach but the feeding frenzy with everyone joining in on the beating and no one stepping in to stop it is unfortunately all too common. Shameful!

Every stinking thug should be expelled, and ANY chance at playing basketball is down the toilet forever. It HAS to be something with DNA for kids to be acting like this, horrific parenting, no respect for your elders, teachers or people in general. BIG little men ganging up on one like a pack of jackals. Throw them in juvie and cut off benefits for the "parent". They're not doing a decent job anyway. Sickening. The blacks wonder why people are against them...........golly, I just wonder why.
Isn't it great how people stand and film this and no one except the big guy comes to his aid. One placed kick could have killed the coach. Disgusting pond scum.

Animals! That's why they have a pack mentality. You will rarely, if ever, see one fight fair. If they'll do this to their coach, imagine what they'll do to some random guy walking down the street that looks in their direction. Animals need to be caged.

All those cell phones to record this incident, yet not one person had the common, human decency to try stopping this vicious attack. He should file a lawsuit against the School District and the parents of those animals and I pray he wins!
I hope these punks are tried as adults and pay dearly for their behavior.
God Bless the Coach for trying to help a bullied victim. May he recover quickly and fully from this vicious beating.

Cstuartsr

I guess they will use the oppressed excuse! I am a retired LE Officer and for the Police Superintendent to say no arrest have been made and they are investigating it is nothing more than a excuse. I mean damn you have video of the thugs involved. Put there butts in jail and charge them as adults that way it will show kids in the future this crap will not be tolerated. He had already gotten on them for being bullies and look what they did. They need to be off the streets. Furthermore they have been suspended so they know who they are so it’s another example of a victim being victimized by politics. When I was in school if anybody had done this it wouldn’t have been the law that handled this it would have been the parents, but we live in a society where kids have no respect for anybody or anything. It’s sad that kids act like this then in some cases the parents turn around and defend there child for acting like an animal.

I realize there are rules and laws that prevent the release of names when it comes to juveniles. I'm really getting tired of this. Juveniles, in most states; including mine, get this automatic expunge/annulment or sealing of their juvenile records. They know this and believe it shields them. It's time to change the law(s) when it comes to these types of violent crimes. When they recognize that this type of criminal behavior can follow them forever, then maybe; just maybe, they will act differently. I doubt it, but hope.
