South Beach, FL - A Miami Beach police officer was viciously stabbed on Saturday night on a busy South Beach sidewalk before other officers fatally shot his attacker (video below).
The incident began shortly after 9 p.m. on Jan. 11 near 10th Street and Ocean Drive in the city’s Art Deco Historic District, WSVN reported.
Miami Beach police responded to a call related to the suspect and the encountered that followed was captured on cell phone video by multiple passersby, TMZ reported.
Miami Beach Police Spokesperson Ernesto Rodriguez said officers “made contact” with the man and then stabbed one of the officers, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.
Videos showed at least four Miami Beach police officers pointing their weapons in the direction of a man who leaning with his leg up on a tree box on the sidewalk.
Then the suspect suddenly lifted his right arm in the air, waving a knife with a long blade in his hand.
A pop could be heard on video as an officer deployed a Taser at the man, who then fell backward onto the sidewalk.
Officers rushed forward to surround the man and take him into custody, but the video showed that a split-second later, they jumped back.
Then two officers opened fire on the man while a third officer at their feet appeared to be crawling away from the suspect.
Witnesses said they heard as many as 20 gunshots, WSVN reported.
“I was on the corner, literally about to walk on the street, when the shots rang out, so we ran around the corner into the alley, because we didn’t know if it was police or, like, just a citizen,” one woman told WSVN.
“We heard it,” another man said. “We were right there. ‘Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,’ and then everybody started running.”
Most of the witnesses heard more than they saw as they dove for cover.
“I just heard the guns, and I go inside with my wife,” another witness told WSVN.
The video showed that when the gunfire ended, officers reached down and dragged the wounded officer away from the suspect.
Both the wounded officer and the suspect were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Unit, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.
The suspect died at the hospital.
Police officials said that seriously wounded officer had undergone surgery and was in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
Officials have not yet released the name of the wounded officer or the suspect.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene in South Beach to assist Miami Beach police, WSVN reported.
Rodriguez said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will take the lead on the officer-involved shooting as is Miami Beach Police Department policy.
