VIDEO: Mayor Backs Woman Arrested After Fighting Cops Who Asked Her To Wear Mask

Holly Matkin

Kaleemah Rozier immediately launched into a vulgar tirade when NYPD officers politely asked her to wear her mask.

Brooklyn, NY – A woman who fought with police and threatened to cough on them after they asked her to wear her mask properly on the subway said she wants “justice” for having been arrested in front of her five-year-old child (video below).

The woman, 22-year-old Kaleemah Rozier, immediately launched into a vulgar tirade when NYPD officers handing out masks at the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center subway station politely asked her to wear her mask properly at approximately 11:50 p.m. on May 13, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea told WPIX.

“I’m gonna cough on all of you!” she declared at one point, according to police.

Rozier, who had her young son with her, was then asked to leave the station due to her disorderly behavior, WPIX reported.

Officers escorted her out of the station, but she snuck back in down another staircase.

As the officers were escorting her out for the second time, Rozier attempted to pull away and hit one of the officers, Commissioner Shea said.

Cell phone footage captured the moment that the irate woman was taken to the ground by a group of NYPD officers.

“Naw, she’s got her kid with her,” one onlooker said. “That’s too much, man.”

Rozier’s vulgar tirade continued as she was placed in handcuffs, the video showed.

“I cannot breathe!” she screamed at one point.

Commissioner Shea said that bodycam footage showed Rozier as she apologized to the officers and told them she has been “under a lot of stress with other issues in her life and she was frustrated,” WPIX reported.

She has since been charged with resisting arrest, but was initially released on a desk appearance ticket.

Cell phone footage of Rozier’s arrest has gone viral, prompting New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to publicly criticize police for enforcing the mandatory face-covering rule.

“Face coverings are important to protect everybody – they’re not optional,” de Blasio confirmed in a tweet. “But no one wants to see an interaction turn into this. We’ve made progress with de-escalation. This isn’t it.”

The mayor subsequently changed police and city procedure, and is now prohibiting officers from arresting citizens who refuse to wear masks, WABC reported.

However, the woman wasn't arrested for not wearing a mask.

On Tuesday, Rozier and her attorney held a press conference to complain about how she was victimized by the NYPD.

"What the cops did to me was wrong," Rozier declared. "It's very hurtful for me, because it was in front of my son, my five-year-old son...like he was crying. I don't understand how they could do that in front of my son."

Rozier claimed that the altercation left her with injuries to her back, knee and neck, Spectrum News reported.

She said that she wants justice, and that the charge against her should be dropped, according to WABC.

Rozier said she also plans to file a civil lawsuit against the department and the city.

"It is not necessary to have what happened to this young victim to happen to anyone else in the city," said her attorney, Sanford Rubenstein, according to WCBS.

De Blasio doubled-down on his assertion that the NYPD was to blame for the situation, WABC reported.

"Whatever else was happening in that moment, we should never have a situation when a mom with her child ends up under arrest for that kind of offense -- it's just not right," the mayor opined.

The NYPD is backing the officers who arrested Rozier.

“We are confident that the police officers in this incident acted appropriately and with respect,” the NYPD said in a statement to WPIX. “This individual was arrested only after her behavior toward officers warranted police action."

She has the routine down cold. In this case as with so many. justice = ghetto lottery cash. and the problem goes away until the next contestant steps forward. And added bonus is her son was with her so learns at the masters knee. What could possibly go wrong.

"I don't understand how they could do that in front of my son."

Her behavior as a parent was reprehensible. It's no wonder so many kids grow up to behave inappropriately these days.

So she can initiate violence, but the Police cannot respond in any way.

There is a book , Saul Alinsky's "rules for radicals" that spells out this tactic of the left. just Google it. It will explain many socialist/globalist actions

"Justice", "I can't breathe" "claimed that the altercation left her with injuries to her back, knee and neck", "What the cops did to me was wrong," "It's very hurtful for me, because it was in front of my son, my five-year-old son...like he was crying. I don't understand how they could do that in front of my son."

There, I hope I covered all the key points to yet another frivolous lawsuit that the city of New York will certainly payout because it involves a minority and because the idiotic mayor decided to speak out against the police for the umpteenth time. Next week you'll hear the mayor claim how he always supports the men and women in blue.

She shouldn't have been behaving like a POS in front of her kid! She deserves to be thrown in jail! Deblasio is a hypocritical moron! Back up the officers for doing their job! Throwing then under the bus is a wicked move!

LOL, weird. I suppose black people need to start showing up to capital buildings fully armed to be left alone about masks.

She should have obeyed the police and put her mask on and the situation would have been avoided . Great example she presents in front of her child to not respect authority. And why is a 5 year old out at 11 pm?

It’s not polite when you put your hands on someone for no reason. We as civilians should be allowed to shoot people (like they do to us) who grab and grope for no reason like seen in this video and then call it some bullshit like resisting arrest when we cringe away from the dirty piggy.

I use to support the police, then I watched officer after office break his oath and enforce unconstitutional and illegal laws. When you chose that over the individual right, you become the problem, its up to them to decide where they land on this, freedom or tyranny.

I am a retired cop and agree with, she acted like a creature an savage, plus wanting ghetto lottery. The cops though, could have avoided all this, by simply letting her go about her night. I am still waiting for someone to show me the actual statue/law on "not wearing a mask" is a crime? In NYC, Michigan and every other DemocRatic state with these tyrannical governments. Stay at home order, not a law! Social distancing, not a law! The list goes on.

The lady's behavior was the cause of her arrest, to begin with, and the Mayor placed the order into effect leaving the police to deal with the problem. Now he blames the police for what happens as a direct result of his orders. The fault for this lies squarely at the feet of the lady who acted like a five-year-old and the Ass clown of a Mayor who issued an order he should have known would be impossible to get even 50% compliance on.

So De Blasio says everyone is supposed to wear a mask. Your city was hit hard by the virus so setting a new rule was fine.
Then you wimp out when a grown woman, in front of her child, hits an officer. So she assaults an officer, spews out curse words in front of her child and you take her side?
You made the rule, the police followed the rule so in my opinion, Mayor Wimp, this is ALL on you!

Sorry but... there is an exemption in NYC for folks with asthma. The woman is apparently saying she cannot breathe “with the mask” on.

This goes too far. She was socially distanced, there really was no reason to put hands on her. Is walking away, while not following supreme mask commands now a crime too?

No crime committed here! This was an unnecessary interaction... A child present should have warranted de-escalation techniques.

It’s clear in these absurd comments, that if she were a blonde, blue eyed woman, reactions to this “Hispanic” woman might be different.

Honest and true... shame on NYPD for this cowardly abuse of power!

I don't understand why race has to be brought into everything. It's a Black cop that puts his hands on her first, by the way (0:22).

It probably has less to do with the mask than her threat to cough on the officers. That's not a victim; it's an aggressor.

GSD_mom
GSD_mom

Clearly you haven’t read some of the earlier comments... my mention of her Hispanic culture/blonde blue eye reference, is in connection with some of the black/ghetto comments above. It’s ridiculous that some people on this page convert everything into “black, and white”...

As to the gal and her cough threat... It’s an antagonist situation. She said something stupid to 8-10 uniformed men following her - some of which, behaving like thugs, were violating your civil liberties... It might aggravate any law abiding citizen, entering the cesspool of the subway system - especially one having a bad day!

Initially, I don’t view her as an aggressor. I view her as someone lacking the skill to articulate herself eloquently. Had she politely, and quietly explained she has difficulty breathing with the mask on, and will apply it in circumstances where she’s unable to socially distance. It may have been a different outcome! As to the “thug” who chose to push, then grab hold of her... I don’t know if “speaking eloquently” changes someone like that. As to the sheep who followed his inexplicable manhandling of a woman... I have no words!

It’s NYC... I’m born and raised in NYC, and I can tell you, it’s common to encounter folks who communicate in a seemingly “aggressive” manner. Experienced NYPD officers know how to talk with people! What pissed the (thug) officer off was, she just blew them off, with a smart mouth reply, and kept walking.

But the fact is, she committed no crime. She was wearing a mask, at her neck! She is not legally required to have it on her face, when social distancing is an option. The officers had no cause to follow her!

There was no reason for this.

While many are blaming her for the behavior, I expect more from law enforcement! Who are trained to deal with people who are temperamental, mentally ill and/or unstable!

Who is training the citizen to deal with overly aggressive cops, infringing on civil liberties?

There isn’t a constitutionalist on the face of the planet, who wouldn’t say that these NYPD officers went too far!

Jim H. - Virginia US
Jim H. - Virginia US

Well I am a Constitutionalist, and I see at 0:22 that she whacks the officer's hand away with pretty strong force (you can hear it). That's when all the cops got forceful with her.

Back the Blue.

GSD_mom
GSD_mom

As previously written and asked Jim... who is training the citizen to deal with cops infringing on civil liberties?

What is the right way to say “don’t touch me” —when you’re not breaking any laws and you’re within your right?

There is training for LEOs.

They could have just let her go about her business...

Where are all the usual “criminal” record link comments? Did you ever think this woman MAY NOT HAVE BEEN A CRIMINAL until she encountered the unprofessional thug who pushed, then grabbed her?

I back the blue... I’ve never written a negative word about law enforcement- on this page or any other!

But this goes too far!!! Law enforcement does not have the authority to FORCE a citizen who is practicing social distancing to pull a mask from their neck, over their face!

It would have been nice if the citizen were polite and pleasant. Nice... but it’s not a crime to be disrespectful.

Why do we train officers for de-escalation?

While I do not condone the citizen’s conduct. This was a rouge stretch of enforcement, complicated by thug like conduct on behalf of at least one of the officers. All unnecessary.

Backing the blue, includes calling out the bad, the lazy, the incompetent, corrupt and underperforming.

Jim H. - Virginia US
Jim H. - Virginia US

Hi, again.

I agree with most of what you wrote, but the lady did not act peacefully and in a civil manner.

"who is training the citizen to deal with cops infringing on civil liberties?"

Seems to be mainly the politicians who say obey. I went out today, and they had those portable blinking highway signs by the side of the road, flashing messages right out of 1984 - "Stay Home," "Be safe" "[our town] Strong."

I don't wear a mask, and I would probably be happily arrested for it in certain public places (but they are not required anywhere in public or private that I have been.) I would not resist the unlawful and unconstitutional arrest with force.

Woman needs to learn to set an example for her child, not act like one.

Regards,
Jim

GSD_mom
GSD_mom

Agreed. The only person directly responsible for the child, totally failed him. The behavior leaves much to be desired.

But two wrongs, don’t make a right.

The officers are trained to recognize a situation evolving to unnecessarily negative level, and de-escalate. I expect a professional, well trained, officer of the law to conduct him-/herself as such. The “thug” officer failed. He was equipped, and had a responsibility to do better. Why others followed him, I can’t begin to reason. While it would be wonderful if we could “expect” better of the woman. I don’t set the bar that high for the citizen.

The judgement she received on this page, could have limited itself to her obscene and disrespectful conduct. Instead, she’s been called everything from the b-word, to a thief setting herself up for a “ghetto payday”. Yet, there is no evidence that she did anything to invite the situation. She was a law abiding citizen, minding her own business. Going to get on the subway. She had a mask on... its was her “choice” (according to the language of the law, as written), when to put it over her mouth.

There is nothing said, in this thread about the BAD POLICE WORK, and the fact that, this citizen did not commit a crime, or even break the governor’s executive order!

It’s disturbing that “backing the blue” can from time to time, on this page, require turning a blind eye, to something that it so obviously wrong!

As it regards the law, unquestionably, an overreach occurred. Governor Cuomo’s comments taken from a New York Times article, dated 4/15/2020.

As a conscientious New Yorker, I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere in public without a mask. But I have no discomfort wearing one. I can’t imagine what it’s like for someone experiencing difficulty. I also respect the right of my fellow citizen to decide what works for them.

Let’s hope the situation resolves itself, without any permanent damage to any of the parties.

Thank you for a pleasant exchange of thoughts.

Wishing you continued health & safety! 🇺🇸🙏❤️🙏🇺🇸

The mayor criticized the police for enforcing the mandatory face mask policy? Which mandatory laws are they supposed to enforce? Apparently, you can avoid arrest for anything if you have a child with you. The child is not a part of the equation. You are no less culpable just because you are stupid enough to act like a criminal while your child accompanies you. What a setup. Civil suit and fame. All because she didn't want to abide by the COVID-19 masking directive.
