VIDEO: Married Off-Duty Cops On 'Date Night' Take Down Armed Robber

Elizabethtown Police Det. Chase McKeown and Officer Nicole McKeown were having "date night" when they foiled a robbery.

Louisville, KY – A pair of married off-duty Elizabethtown police officers foiled a robbery at the restaurant where they having a “date night” on Saturday (video below).

The incident occurred when Elizabethtown Police Detective Chase McKeown and his wife, Elizabethtown Police Officer Nicole McKeown, were eating dinner at Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers in Louisville, WDRB reported.

The newlyweds, who have only been married for six months, said they were out on a “date night” at the restaurant where they first ate after their wedding.

"At our church, we've been focusing on marriage," Det. McKeown explained and said the church advocated one date night a week.

The couple said they had just sat down to eat in the back of the restaurant when 30-year-old Justin Carter entered the chicken restaurant wearing a mask over his face, WDRB reported.

"I think we kind of both saw him at the same time," Officer McKeown said.

She said that at first she connected the mask with flu season but quickly realized that she was watching something else happen and said something about it to her husband, according to WDRB.

"I looked at him and said, 'that’s kind of odd,’” Officer McKeown said.

Surveillance video of the front counter of the restaurant showed that Carter pointed a gun at the cashier and demanded cash, WDRB reported.

Officer McKeown said her husband handed her his cell phone and told her to call 911, but she wasn’t about to let him deal with the armed robber on his own.

Surveillance video from inside the restaurant showed the couple sitting in a booth at the back of the restaurant.

Then the video showed they took their guns out of their holsters, got up from their seats, and headed toward the cash register with their weapons drawn.

Carter dashed toward the exit as soon as the officers made their presence known, but security video showed the Elizabethtown police couple pursued the armed robber out of the restaurant.

The suspect dropped his weapon as he was going out the door and fled when he got outside, but the officers caught up with him a few blocks later and detained him at gunpoint until Louisville police arrived on the scene, according to WDRB.

Carter was arrested by the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department (LMPD) and charged with robbery, receipt of stolen property, and being a felon in possession of a gun.

The arrest citation said the gun that he used to rob Raising Cane’s was stolen from the Jeffersontown Police Department, the Lexington Herald Leader reported.

LMPD applauded the Elizabethtown officers’ bravery and said they acted "honorably and heroically,” WDRB reported.

The restaurant also had a lot of thanks to express to the officers.

“We are extremely blessed that they chose to dine with us," a restaurant representative said. "It's because of good people like Chase and Nicole who give us good hope for tomorrow…we'll never be able to thank them enough."

The McKeowns said they weren’t comfortable with all the attention they had gotten for their actions, according to WDRB.

"Maybe it's the term 'hero,'" Det. McKeown explained. "We don't feel that way. We just feel like our training kicked in."

Officer McKeown said they love the restaurant and would be returning again in the future, WDRB reported.

Glad it all worked out.

BUT...

When teaching my CCW students, I do NOT - repeat, NOT - recommend getting involved to this level.

CCW holders are NOT cops and are under NO obligation to do anything but defend themselves because if you do, there is a good chance you will be severely hurt or killed.

I point to the tragic involvement of Joseph Wilcox and the Las Vegas Walmart shooting (https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/vegas-cop-killers/cost-bravery-vegas-bystander-died-trying-stop-rampage-n127361) where Wilcox was killed because he inserted himself into a situation.

My advice, if you are armed (open carry or you are in a Constitutional Carry state) or you are a CCW holder and you're in a situation like this one, take a defensive position and defend yourself/family as appropriate, but DO NOT insert yourself as these brave cops did.

You're welcome.

I wonder if the next time they eat at the restaurant will offer them a free meal to make up for the one that was interrupted by the would-be robber?

Who is the armed criminal that thinks it's ok to go in a restaurant and demand money only because he has a gun and is threatening to harm people

And as soon as someone else who is eating at the restaurant decides that its not ok to threaten and steal from innocent people and approaches the young man who probably has no parenteral upbringing or family to teach him morals and values the young man runs and try's to hide showing he is a coward and will probably end up doing this for his entire short life.

Pull your weapon and lay him down, at least here that's how it works. He's committing a forcible felony with a lethal weapon in his hand.

Be sure of your backstop and take him out before he loses his patience and shoots the woman in the face.

My gosh, that is a satisfying video.

Good triumphing over evil. Brave man, and woman. God bless them both.

Mothers struggle with proper disciplining of their children hence why there are so many out of control entitled young men out there. (mothers are great nurturers) Fathers are better at holding children accountable but the problem is their absence.

When a toddler reaches for something that is off limits like a tv remote or a cell phone, if the parent doesn’t teach the child, ”No, do not touch that. It’s not yours) there is a strong chance the child will grow up believing, “I want it so I’ll take it”.

I’d guess that the vast majority of these hood rats were raised in a single parent household by a mom who didn’t enforce discipline and probably didn’t demonstrate it in their own lives.

It sad because today, most people associate parenting with providing materially for the child. It’s part of the socialist redistribution of wealth culture but you could give most poor and/or ignorant people millions in cash and they’d be bankrupt or dead in a couple of years. An easy test is ask people, “What would you do if something gave you a million dollars in cash?” Most people would tell you what they’d buy down to their last 100K.
