Las Vegas, NV - Las Vegas police officer confronted a carjacking suspect who was stabbing himself, and the incident ended with the officer shooting the man as he charged the officer. The video shows that the officer was just a fraction of a second away from getting stabbed (video below.)
The incident all started on July 11 when Caleb Baylock attempted to carjack two men at knifepoint in front of the SuperPawn at 4111 N. Rancho Drive, according to the Review-Journal.
One of the suspects grabbed a hammer and fought Baylock off until the suspect fled.
Officer William "Chris" Pollock arrived and Baylock was pointed out to him. As Officer Pollock moved in to contact him, the suspect began stabbing himself with his knife.
The officer followed behind in his vehicle while ordering the man to stop and drop the knife.
"He is actively stabbing himself," Officer Pollock called our on the radio.
Baylock finally turned his attention at the officer and charged, raising his knife to stab the officer.
Officer Pollock opened fire, dropping the would-be cop-killer just three feet away.
Caleb Baylock died on scene of acute lead poisoning.
Assistant Sheriff Todd Fasulo spoke at a media briefing on Thursday, saying, “As an officer, if somebody is coming at me with a knife and you’re within 3 feet of me, the first thing that goes through my mind is, ‘What am I going to do to protect myself and ensure that he doesn’t cause me great bodily harm?’”
Had Baylock lived, he would have been charged with robbery with a deadly weapon, kidnapping with a deadly weapon and assault with a deadly weapon on a protected person.
