Milwaukee, WI – A man on a bicycle busted through police line tape to interrupt the investigation of a suspicious package Monday morning in Milwaukee (video below).
The suspicious backpack, left on top of an electrical box in the 100-block of W. Wisconsin Avenue, was reported to authorities shortly before 6:40 a.m. on May 21, and prompted a response from Milwaukee police and eventually, the bomb squad, WTMJ reported.
Just before 9 a.m., a bomb technician wearing protective gear attached a cable to the bag, and dragged it out into the middle of the intersection, WISN reported.
The bomb squad was slowly inspecting the backpack from a distance when all of a sudden, a man on a bicycle blew through the police tape and dropped his bike next to the bag.
Numerous videos of the man were captured by the news media and bystanders.
In the video, the man jumped off his bike and let it drop. Then he opened the top of the backpack as it lay on the rain-soaked street, and began going through the contents, tossing items all over the street.
Then he picked up the back from its bottom and dumped what remained inside it out onto the pavement.
The video showed the man then threw the bag on the ground in apparent disgust, and then raised his arms as if to say “there’s nothing there.”
From behind him, three officers can be seen running towards the man, and then tackling him from behind, with enough force to move the man well away from the backpack and its contents.
A witness told Milwaukee Patch that the man had said, "I'm going to defuse this situation."
Officers arrested the man, and he has been charged with obstruction and disorderly conduct.
