VIDEO: Man Starts Beating Another Customer Who Didn't Thank Him For Holding Door
Lakeland, FL – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a man who beat up another customer in a liquor store because the man failed to thank him from holding the door on his way into the store (video below).
The incident, which was captured by the store’s security cameras, occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on May 9 at a Publix Liquor store located on Highway 540A East, WFLA reported.
Video showed that one customer, who was with a friend, held the door open for another man who was behind him walking into the store.
The first two men who walked into the store went down one aisle, and the man who followed them in went down another aisle, but then a confrontation sparked as they spoke over the shelves, the video showed.
The victim told Polk County sheriff’s deputies that the man who had held the door confronted him, WFLA reported.
“You don't say 'thank you' to people who hold the door for you?'” he said the man asked him.
The victim told deputies that he then said “thank you.”
“But apparently that wasn’t enough,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told WFLA. “Because our now suspect, who was originally a gentleman, started jawing back and forth. That’s a southern vernacular for talking back to each other.”
The altercation escalated to the point where the man who held the door told him "I'll kick your –ss if you say another word."
“Another word,” the victim said he replied, and that was when the other man rushed around the end of the aisle and attacked him, according to WFLA.
“The previous southern gentleman who held the door open who’s now the suspect promptly was good for his word,” Sheriff Judd said. “Because he walked around the aisle and started beating him up.”
The video showed the victim tried to get away from his attacker but the man assaulting him hung on.
At first, the suspect’s friend followed him as he jumped on the victim and did nothing to intervene.
But then the video showed he tried to pull his friend off of the customer he was attacking.
As he walked away after the fight ended, the suspect’s friend bent over and retrieved the victim’s hat that had fallen to the floor when he was attacked.
The video showed the suspect’s friend returned the hat to the victim before he rejoined his friend and the two left the liquor store.
The victim and the suspect exchanged middle finger salutes as the pair left the store, the video showed.
“Come on man, what are you thinking?” Sheriff Judd ranted to WFLA. “Were your three brain cells in overload? Why don’t you just let it go? Get you a bottle of liquor, go back to the house, have you a drink. But no, they had to have a kerfuffle right there in the middle of the store.”
The sheriff’s office has asked anyone with information about the suspect to contact them at (863) 499-2400.
“We have a battery complaint we need to file against him and we don’t want him to miss out on that,” Sheriff Judd said. “Here’s our promise: We’ll open the door for you at the county jail and say thank you if you open the door first.”
