Athens, GA – Bodycam footage captured the moment when an Athens-Clarke County police officer was nearly slashed by a machete-wielding attacker while responding to a domestic violence call (video below).
The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. on Oct. 5, after police received a report of a domestic disturbance at the University Garden Apartments on Baxter Drive, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Bodycam footage showed Athens-Clarke County Police Officer Roger Williams as he made contact with the camo-clad suspect outside the apartment complex.
“Hey man, what are you doing?” the officer asked him. “Go ahead and get your hands out of your pocket for me.”
But the suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Salvador Salazar, ignored his commands and immediately began walking towards Officer Williams, bodycam footage showed.
The officer backed away and drew his duty weapon as he continued to order Salazar to show his hands.
The suspect ignored him and began walking down the sidewalk towards a parking area.
“Stop – hey man – stop!” the officer ordered, trailing along behind Salazar.
When the suspect refused, Officer Williams quickly began advancing on him from behind, the video showed.
Just before he reached him, Salazar pulled a machete out of his pocket with his right hand and swung the blade just inches away from the officer.
Officer Williams rapidly fired three rounds, and the suspect immediately collapsed onto the pavement – but he wasn’t ready to give up just yet.
“Get on the ground now!” the officer ordered, as Salazar moved onto his hands and knees, still gripping the machete.
A second officer arrived at the scene at the same moment, at which point the suspect began crawling with the knife in his hand.
He eventually flattened onto his stomach, but still hadn’t let go of the blade before the clip ended.
Salazar was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital, where he remained in serious condition Wednesday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
He has been charged with one count of aggravated assault against an officer.
Officer Williams has been placed on paid administrative leave, as per protocol, while the officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (BGI), according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
