Newnan, GA – An intoxicated man allegedly spanked a stranger’s child in a grocery store self-checkout line on Tuesday, then tussled with officers who came to arrest him, bodycam footage showed (video below).
According to the 2-year-old boy’s father, James Morris, the little boy began to whine when he wasn’t allowed to have a treat, at which point a stranger turned and slapped the toddler on the top of his left hand, The Newnan Times-Herald reported.
Morris said that the man then grabbed the child’s left arm, and spanked him three times.
“He told my son, ‘This is what we do to kids in Mexico,’” Morris said. “I told him, ‘Well, this isn’t Mexico.’”
Store employees rushed to intervene, and quickly separated the parties, WXIA reported.
Morris told the Newnan Times-Herald that his son wasn’t hurt during the incident, and that he didn’t cry.
“He really just seemed astonished that this guy decided to spank him,” Morris said. “He just looked at me and seemed confused by the whole thing.”
With bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, Martinez told police that the boy was “doing something with a candy bar.” He then began to curse in front of employees and customers.
“Don’t do it, Juan,” one of the officers told Martinez as he began to pull away from the officer’s attempt to handcuff him.
The man continued to resist.
“You’re about to get jacked up, Juan,” the officer cautioned one last time.
“Juan was taken to the ground and we were able to grab his arm so it could be cuffed,” police told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We had to stand Juan up and escort him out the business.”
After he was secured in the back of a patrol car, Martinez began kicking the windows and doors, police said. He was transported to the jail, but would not respond to jail staff, which prompted them to summons an ambulance.
The man was transported to a local emergency room, where he was evaluated and medically cleared before he was returned to the jail facility.
Martinez was charged with battery, disorderly conduct, and obstruction of officers, WXIA reported. He was also banned from the store.
