VIDEO: Inmate Sucker-Punches, Beats Deputy Inside Florida Jail

Inmate Michler Gabriel was already facing drug and weapons charges prior to the brutal assault.

Tampa, FL – A detention deputy was brutally attacked by an inmate who tried to shove his way through a pod doorway at the Hillsborough County jail facility (video below).

The altercation occurred at the Orient Road Jail at 11:15 a.m. on Jan. 21, as a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) detention deputy was opening a door to the jail pod, the department said in the video release.

Security footage showed inmate Michler Gabriel, 38, as he walked alongside the detention deputy, who was heading for the doorway.

The detention deputy motioned for Gabriel to back away before he unlocked the door.

But as the door swung open, Gabriel attempted to push past him, the video showed.

When the detention deputy shoved him away, the inmate suddenly punched him repeatedly in the face, knocking him into a wall.

A second detention deputy witnessed the attack and wrapped his arms around Gabriel from behind as the injured detention deputy helped force his attacker backwards into a corner.

Additional jail personnel then flooded the pod and led Gabriel away.

“This is a prime example of the dangerous environment deputies willingly go into everyday in order to keep violent people like Michler Gabriel off our streets,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said in the press release.

“I will not tolerate anyone who would have such a lack of respect for another human being, especially for someone who selflessly serves the citizens of Hillsborough County,” Sheriff Chronister continued. “While I am thankful that the deputy involved was not seriously hurt, we will make sure that Gabriel is prosecuted to the fullest extent for his actions.”

Gabriel was already facing charges of possession of a controlled substance, driving with a suspended license, felon in possession of a firearm, and armed trafficking when the attack occurred, according to the HCSO.

He has since been charged with battery by a detained person and battery on a law enforcement officer.

24 prior mugshots? Really?

This is why we need three strikes laws. A second chance is usually appropriate, but not an eleventeenth one.

Having worked as a corrections officer at a local prison here in the panhandle of Florida I can attest to the fact these inmates will turn at the drop of a hat for no reason whatsoever! It usually doesn't have much to do with the officer theirselves rather than something that's troubling the inmate and he sees the officer as a good release for his frustrations! And a prison I worked at what gladly excuse the inmate for his actions being it was a private facility and they depended on a clean record!

Worked in corrections. Saw/experienced this type of thing many times. Comes out of nowhere many times. Those officers did a good job.
