VIDEO: High School Wrestler Takes Down Man Trying To Kidnap Children
Las Cruces, NM – A high school wrestler stopped a crazed man from kidnapping three children at a gas station in New Mexico on Wednesday (video below).
The incident began at about 9 a.m. on March 25 at the Chucky’s gas station when a woman got off a Greyhound bus with her three children, ages nine, two, and one, according to Las Cruces Sun News.
The woman said she was waiting for an Uber to arrive to pick them up when she noticed man staring at her family.
Surveillance video from outside Chucky’s showed the man – later identified as 22-year-old Daniel Arroyo – tried to take the children from their mother.
Arroyo grabbed hold of the two-year-old’s arm and told the mother to give him her child, the Las Cruces Sun News reported.
The mother kicked Arroyo and Arroyo the hit her in the head, causing her to fall back on top of her one-year-old son who was in a carrier strapped onto her back.
Two bystanders, a man and a woman, tried to intervene but could not stop Arroyo, the video showed.
Arroyo punched the man and tried to hit the woman, the Las Cruces Sun News reported.
The mother grabbed her children and rushed inside the store seeking safety, the surveillance showed.
But Arroyo was close on their heels.
A couple of people tried to hold the doors closed but Arroyo fought them hard, punching them in the face and head.
“Give me the kids,” Arroyo yelled, according to the Las Cruces News.
Police said it doesn’t appear that Arroyo knew the mother or the children he had targeted.
He rushed into the store after them and engaged in a fistfight with another customer who was trying to stop him, the video showed.
Arroyo might have succeeded in taking the children and seriously injuring more people if it weren’t for the bravery of a local high school wrestler, the Las Cruces News reported.
Canaan Bower, 16, was across the street putting gas in his truck when he saw the commotion at Chucky’s.
He bravely raced over to the store in his truck and went inside to help.
Bower took Arroyo to the ground and pinned him down, holding him there until Dona Ana County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to take the violent suspect into custody, the surveillance video showed.
Arroyo was arrested by Dona and charged with four counts of battery, two counts of assault, two counts of child abuse, and one count of kidnapping, according to the Las Cruces Sun News.
