VIDEO: Good Samaritan Uses Shopping Cart To Take Down Fleeing Shoplifter
Peachtree City, GA – A fast-thinking good Samaritan stopped a shoplifter who was running from police in front of a Home Depot (video below).
The incident occurred at about 4:46 p.m. on Jan. 18 and was captured by the surveillance cameras outside of the Walmart in Peachtree City, which is located across the parking lot from the Home Depot.
Bodycam video from the Peachtree City Police Department showed an officer following a suspect through the parking lot and calling out to the dispatcher.
Then the suspect spotted the officer and took off running.
Bodycam video showed the officer pursued the suspect through the parking lot.
But surveillance video from the Walmart store had the best view of the incident by far.
Footage from Walmart’s exterior security cameras showed several shoppers walking through the parking lot back to their cars with shopping carts.
In the video, one of the shoppers clearly heard the pursuit going on behind him and stopped to see what’s happening.
Then, thinking quickly, the shopper turned his cart the other way, and waited.
When the fleeing suspect got close enough, and turned to look back over his shoulder at the officer pursuing him, the good Samaritan shoved his cart directly in front of the running man.
The video showed the suspect didn’t see that cart until he smashed into it and fell to the pavement.
The video showed the good Samaritan held up his arms in a victory celebration after his direct hit.
The brief delay allowed the officer a second to catch up and stop the fleeing shoplifter, the video showed.
And then several additional officers arrived to assist the officer in taking the suspect into custody.
The man with the well-timed shopping cart got a pat on the back and a thank you from officers while some other customers helped him pick up his purchases that had gone flying when the suspect hit the cart at full speed, the video showed.
The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Marcus Smith of Forsyth, WGCL reported.
Smith was arrested and charged with felony shoplifting and obstruction of an officer.
Peachtree City police later posted video of the incident on their official Facebook page along with a thank you to the good Samaritan, who has not been identified.
“Again, while we are eternally grateful for this citizen's quick thinking and impeccable timing, we never encourage anybody to intervene in a police situation,” the police wrote. “If the decision is made to do so, please consider the safety of yourself and all those around you as a priority.
