VIDEO: Family Demands Justice For Man Fatally Shot While Shooting At Police

Thurman Blevins was fatally shot while shooting at police officers.

Minneapolis, MN - Minneapolis police have released bodycam footage of the fatal officer-involved shooting of Thurman Blevins Sunday night (video below.)

Despite the video showing that the shooting was justified, Thurman's family is demanding "justice."

The incident happened June 23 at around 5:30 p.m. as officers were dispatched to the 4700 block of Bryant Avenue North for an intoxicated male walking around shooting a gun into the air, according to the dispatch log.

The suspect was described as a light complexion black male, with a white or grey tank top, black backpack, age 35-36, six feet tall, 180 pounds, with tapered hair, holding a bottle of gin and a can of Four Loko liquor.

"That’s very, very specific,” Officer Ryan Kelly said in the raw bodycam video.

"Yeah," replied Officer Justin Schmidt.

After driving through the area, the officers located Blevins, 31, with tapered hair, in a black tank top, with a black backpack, carrying a bottle of gin, with a gun visibly sticking out of his pocket.

“What about this guy?" Officer Schmidt said. "He’s got a bottle of gin. Is he black tank top, tapered hair? Yeah. He’s got a gun!”

Blevins started running and the officer chased him while continually ordering him to stop.

“Stop or I’ll shoot. Stop or I’ll shoot. Stop or I’ll shoot,” Officer Kelly told him.

Blevins just responded saying things such as, "Come on, man," and "I didn't do nothing bro."

"You've got a gun motherf---r," Officer Schmidt said.

"No," Blevins replied.

"Yes you do!" Officer Schmidt said, "Put it down. I will f---ing shoot you. Put your hands up!"

Blevins continued to tell officers to leave him alone as he ran from them.

Once in an alley, Blevins drew his gun and fired a shot at the officers.

Both officers responded by destroying Blevins in a hail of gunfire.

According to KSTP, Officer Schmidt's attorney released a statement which said, "The video shows Thurman Blevins fired one shot at officers. It’s gratifying to know the actions of the officers were justified.  Hopefully the public learned a lesson to wait for all the facts and video to come out before vilifying officers."

Shortly after the shooting, the Minneapolis NAACP president had released a statement which said, "Eye witnesses stated he was killed while running away from the officers. The witnesses say that he was sitting on the curb with his girlfriend and baby. The cup that he was drinking can still be seen at the scene.”

The Blevins family was able to see the video an hour before its public release.

After seeing the video, Sydnee Brown, spokesperson for the Blevins family said, "Officers Ryan Kelly and Justin Schmidt should be fired without pay and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

You can see the video of the shooting below. This is a computer stabilized version of the video produced by the National Center for Audio & Video Forensics. If you want to see the unedited bodycam video, you can see it on the City of Minneapolis website. WARNING: Graphic Content.

"Thurman's family is demanding "justice." - They got it. Just because they disagree with the outcome does not change that justice was served. It appears there is no level to the depth of stupidity from this minority community. What seems quite common sense to 85-90% of the general public just seemes to fly right over the head of these cretins.

The boy was incapable of understanding words so he figured bullets would help and they did. Justice was served, he would not listen, he fired first, and received his sentence quickly. End of story!

Just goes to show how difficult it is to recognize a threat during a chase. Great job, officers.

The whole thing is unfortunate. I'm not going to fault the cops but they could have handled this differently and had they done so, the perp would likely still be alive. I'm going to try to get into the thought process of each so we can see how it went down.

Policemen receive a call on the radio and the suspect matches the description. They aren't too concerned that he has the bottle of gin, but when the one cop sees the Perp's gun, the escalation immediately begins. Now the cops are fearful because so many cops have been shot in the performance of their duties by lowlife thugs for not taking immediate control of the situation. It was less than professional to yell, "Put your fucking hands up!" The Officer's yelling and cursing with pistol drawn completely set the stage and the tone for the rest of the encounter. Could they have done it differently? Maybe... I'm not a cop, but nobody likes being cursed at. That part was unnecessary and their screaming only escalated the situation. Had they spoken in a more conversational tone, they might not have stimulated the Perp's flight response. Who knows? If the Perp had a rap sheet a mile long, it's pretty much a given he'll run at the first opportune moment, no matter what they say or do...

From the perp's point of view, he wasn't doing anything. He's just sitting on the corner having a drink and visiting and talking with... his baby mama? He doesn't think the cops can see his gun and lies to them. Not the smartest thing to do. Their constant screaming and making demands he do something he doesn't want to do (when in his head he thinks he's done nothing wrong) triggers his flight response. While he's running he repeatedly asks to be left alone. That's all he wants is for them to leave him alone. But what the perp (who may be a felon) doesn't appear to understand is that he is not authorized to own a gun, let alone open carry and he shouldn't be drinking in public like that. Well, in truth, he understands but doesn't agree with it. The fact he has the gun is what ends up getting himself killed and the irony is, he more than likely was carrying for his protection and had the pit bull with him for the same reason.

The Perp committed some mistakes that resulted in his earning himself a Darwin Award. Running away from a cop who asks you to put your hands up is not smart because you are further escalating the situation and this will not work to your favor... Running away from a cop who repeatedly tells you he is going to shoot you is not the smartest thing to do, but that PROBABLY WILL NOT get you shot. Running away with a gun in your possession MAY get you shot. Running away with a gun in your hand PROBABLY WILL get you shot. Running away, AND pointing a gun and shooting at the cops DEFINITELY WILL get you shot... Figure the odds.

What the Perp SHOULD have done when the cops said, "Putting your fucking hands up!" was put his hands up. Had he done that he'd still be alive today. The cops could have taken his gun from him and hung on to it while they had a conversation wtih him and IF he had done nothing wrong, everything would have ended peacefully, and he would have gotten his gun back (assuming he had a permit to open carry).

Blacks argue that the laws unfairly target them. But do they? How many people in white neighborhoods sit on the corner drinking hard liquor with guns hanging out of their pockets? Hello?

If you have a gun and shoot at the police you get what you deserve. Sick of people thinking that they can disobey the law and then get away with murder.

He didn't do nothin. Just a poor criminal carrying a gun he's not allowed to have so he could use it to do what? He runs rather than obeying the police? Citizens who obey the law don't have any reason to run from police. Criminals do. Carry a gun illegally, get told by police to raise your hands, run, pull the gun, and shoot at police. He got justice. Democrats always want to wait until after they commit more crimes and kill someone to clean up the mess so they can cry about how evil and racist Republicans are.

I blame the criminal's parents as well because if they are lying and making excuses for their son's criminal mischief here, then he probably did other things when he was younger that they made excuses for instead of disciplining him when they should have!!!!!

Way justified! Thank God none of the officers were shot. It astounds me that anyone could even think this was a bad shoot. The “family” spokesperson thinks the officers should be “fired without pay” I’m gonna go out on a limb here but I think it’s pretty standard that you don’t get paid if you’ve been fired. It’s pretty clear that none of them are rocket scientist.

WHO doesn't KNOW that: Drinking in public--is against the law. Being drunk in public--is against the law. Lying to Law Enforcement ("LE")--is against the law. Concealing a weapon--is against the law (in most states). If you're a felon, owning a gun or a gun in your possession--is against the law. Discharging a firearm in city limits--is against the law. Disobeying LE direct commands--is against the law. Evading LE--is against the law. Discharging a firearm at any LE--WILL GET YOU KILLED! It's as simple as that. The Police had every right for their actions. Let this video be a lesson. After the investigation is complete, these Officers should be given an award! Any attorney that might take this families case, should be disbarred! Period.

The "family" took over the press conference from the DA, fists raised and rapping their response. Head of NAACP, Pounds, opening her big mouth again demanding the officers be charged and one of Blevins' cousins stating there will be a price to pay, words to that effect. Well, the riots will begin, burning, looting and when the police step in to again stop the violence they will be picking on the black community. Claims that a disproportionate number of black males are being arrested, disproportionate number of blacks arrested compared to whites or any other minority group.......guess what, they COMMIT MORE CRIMES !! It's been proven. Yet, black on black crime is ok, rarely do you see any protesting unless a gangbanger shoots into a house and kills an innocent child. Wake up black community, we're getting to the point where we really hear bla bla bla. Yeah.......forgot to mention, he was getting his life in order and getting a job and becoming a provider to society instead of a drain of it. He had an extensive criminal record but that's ok......... I'm sick of hearing how bad police are....... Do what is right and you won't get killed. I'm also sick or hearing how those killed by police were decent people. DO WHAT'S ASKED OF YOU AND YOU WON'T CAUSE YOUR OWN DEATH.
