Denver, CO – A driver who was trying to escape a fight in LoDo early Sunday morning ran over two pedestrians in front of police as he made his getaway (video below).
Denver police received a call at about 1:46 a.m. on Aug. 25 about a large fight in the entertainment district located at Market and 20th Streets, KMGH reported.
Denver Police Division Chief Ron Thomas said officers were already on patrol in the area when the call came in because large crowds in the “LoDo” area frequently spill out into the streets at closing time on weekends.
Officers responded to the scene and had to shoot pepper balls toward a group to break up a fight, Denver Police Public Information Officer Douglas Schepman told KMGH.
Bystanders filmed multiple videos of the chaotic scene which showed a large group of people fighting in the street as officers stood on the nearby corner with pepper ball guns.
One video showed a man inside a silver Chevy Cobalt who was being attacked by as many as 10 other people who were beating on his car and trying to break the doors off by bending them the wrong way.
The video showed the driver trying to get his door shut and start his car to escape to safety.
When he finally got the car in gear, he shot forward into the intersection and struck two pedestrians who were in his path.
One of the pedestrians bounced off the hood of the car and landed on the pavement.
The other flew across the intersection after the corner of the car clipped him, the video showed.
The video showed the car didn’t stop after it left the two people injured in the road, one of whom was not moving at first.
Officers and bystanders ran to the victims laying in the street to offer assistance.
Both victims were transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, KMGH reported.
Police said they did not know what had led to the fight in the street, but witness Victor Marquez said the video (second on the link below) showed it all.
"That's what the video shows, just everybody throwing punches in all directions but mostly you see the guy in the car just being harassed by like six guys throwing stuff at him," Marquez told KMGH. "I truly believe [the driver] was just in a fight or flight mode. He was just trying to get out of there."
Chief Thomas said police have identified the driver of the car that hit the pedestrians; however, no one has been arrested.
The chief said the investigation was ongoing.
