Dallas, Texas - A group of burglars got a rude awakening over the weekend after one armed homeowner fought back.
Around 4:30 AM on Saturday, Terry Morgan woke up to the sound of someone knocking on the door of his Oak Hills home on Lea Crest Drive. He quickly checked his home monitoring system and could see multiple people at his door trying to use a crowbar to get in, one of them armed.
Morgan had prepared for this, "I immediately jumped up, and grabbed my weapon, and came here and aimed my weapon towards the door because I thought they were on their way in," said Morgan. According to CBSDFW he then laid in wait on the living room floor, hand on his gun and eyes on the door and the security monitor. “I know if they get in this house, I might not live to see that sun coming up in a few hours, so immediately I thought about survival,” said Morgan.
As he waited for the men to make a move, he quickly thought about the best way to defend himself.
“He was aiming pretty low, so I had to be lower than him, so I just wanted to make sure when he got the door in that I got the first shot out,” said Morgan.
When the burglars noticed the security cameras, they began to move to the other side, so Morgan went to his window for a better look. When the group heard Morgan inside, they got spooked and began firing at the home. "So they started to shoot, BOOM! They were shooting as they were retreating to a vehicle that was waiting six feet from my driveway," Morgan reported. That is when the armed homeowner returned fire. "I put it through the bar and I fired. BOOM!" A brief shootout took place before the group escaped in a getaway car.
Morgan credits preparedness for being able to protect his property and himself that day. “They’re coming like that because they don’t care, so we have to stay ready as well,” said Morgan. Without the home monitoring system, Morgan knows the case may not get very far without the help of the public. “I am happy because at the end of the day the surveillance is going to allow them to be put on the local news stations. They’re being hunted down like fugitives right now."
Morgan added his concern for those involved. “I don’t want to shoot anyone’s kid,” he said, but added that breaking into people’s homes at 4:30 a.m. will get you killed. “Had you killed me, or I killed you, one of our families would’ve changed. And it would’ve taken a long time for everybody to get back to normal."
“Over here, we have nothing. You’re taking from people who have nothing. We’ll fight for everything, every last inch,” Morgan concluded. “Find something better, educate yourselves, get something you can do better than breaking into people’s homes, because you will be killed.”
