VIDEO: Correctional Officer Drives Through Protesters Blocking ICE Staff Parking

A correctional officer at a Rhode Island detention facility drove his truck through protesters blocking staff parking.

Central Falls, RI – A correctional officer is under investigation after he drove his pickup truck through a group of protesters blocking the parking lot to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center on Wednesday night (video below).

The protesters were sitting on the pavement blocking access to the parking for employees of the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, the Associated Press reported.

That’s when a uniformed correctional officer, driving a black pickup truck, arrived for work and wanted to get into the parking lot.

A video of the incident posted to social media showed protesters were sitting on the ground in a line in front of the parking lot entrance with their arms linked, chanting and holding signs, when the correctional officer arrived for work.

The video showed the pickup truck stopped abruptly when it got to the protesters, and then the driver blew the horn to tell them to move out of the way.

But instead of clearing a path for the correctional officer on his way to work, the protesters stood up and held their hands up to the truck, commanding the driver to stop, the video showed.

The protesters quickly surrounded the front of the black truck and when the driver honked the horn again, they began pounding on the vehicle’s hood.

Despite the brouhaha in front of him, the driver crept forward slowly and made his way through the aggressive crowd that continued to bang on his car and scream at him as he made his way to work, the video showed.

The protesters began chanting “the whole world is watching” as the pickup came to a stop. Then the surrounded the truck and banged on it and chanted.

Police officers who were detailed to work the protest failed to intervene in the melee, The Washington Post reported.

But other correctional officers deployed pepper spray to disperse the unruly crowd and the driver of the truck was able to walk into the prison after parking.

Never Again Action, a Jewish youth organization, said that the truck struck two of the protesters who refused to move out of the way, the Associated Press reported.

They said 64-year-old Jerry Belair suffered a broken leg and internal bleeding from the impact of the truck.

Never again claimed another protester had been injured by the truck but did not offer a name or proof of the injuries, the Associated Press reported.

Never Again Action also said three protesters were treated for pepper spray inhalation after detention center employees used the chemical to break up the crowd banging on the pickup truck.

On Thursday, Wyatt Detention Warden Daniel Martin announced that Correctional Captain Thomas Woodworth had been placed on administrative leave while an investigation into the incident was conducted; however, he stopped short of confirming that Capt. Woodworth was the driver of the black truck, the Associated Press reported.

Warden Martin said the investigation would also explore “Wyatt correctional officers' response and the Wyatt's protocols regarding protest activities outside of the facility."

The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office said it was investigating the incident, The Washington Post reported.

Central Falls Police Major Craig Horton said his agency was assisting with the investigation.

“Once we have a full understanding of the relevant facts, we will determine how to proceed,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement. “Peaceful protest is a fundamental right of all Americans; it is unfortunate last night’s situation unfolded as it did. We urge all to exercise restraint as our investigation proceeds.”

Though it may not have been lawful or right for the corrections officer to just drive through, the protestors should learn that: IT’S BETTER TO BE ALIVE AND MOVE OUT OF THE WAY, RATHER THAN BE IN THE RIGHT BUT DEAD. And FYI, the people you’re protesting for don’t really give 2 shits about you out on the streets at night or your well being. Just saying. Pick your battles you idiots. You’re. It going to win against a truck, give way, and make a complaint later. You jumping on the truck or hitting it doesn’t make you any more right.

We need a device for situations like this, A 1000UF Capacitor connected to the body of the vehicle and Discharge it when these moron touch it.

The local police and/or state police department should have been there and arrested their scrawny little butts.

“Peaceful protest is a fundamental right of all Americans;”

Yes it is but preventing other people from going about their business and assaulting a person’s vehicle is NOT “peaceful” protest nor is it legal.

So tired of these people blocking others and expecting no consequences. Glad we didn't see this in Oregon recently.

I had to watch it again, wish there was a shot from the front. I only see one problem, the truck driver should not have stopped and perhaps increase his speed another 25 to 30 mph for a better effect

Police officers who were detailed to work the protest failed to intervene in the melee, The Washington Post reported. Are they being investigated? Blocking others from getting to work is not a right. Beating on his vehicle is not a right. Shouldn't the protesters been arrested when they blocked him and beat on his truck? What are the rest of us suppose to do when the morons act like that?

les0060
les0060

How about your right not to be harassed and your freedom to go where you want. Everyone of the protesters should be charged with civil rights violation for blocking his right to employment.

Yes they have the right to protest but they do not have the right to block the entrance of damage a vehicle. They got what they deserved. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Don't these folks have jobs? Who the hell has time to protest these things?

The police should have done the same as the correctional officers. Mace the whole lot of them cry babies. Arrest some with automatic 30 days in jail. That would solve a lot of this BS. Stupid ass people. You cannot assault people or their vehicles, nor block an entrance . They deserved worse. Support laws and law enforcement officers.

We are taught as kids not to get in front of cars and I find it very hard to believe anybody sustained internal bleeding or broken leg 🙄. I mean I’m all for these idiots to go play in traffic. Over these bleeding heart fucktards. If they want illegals here sooo bad why don’t they offer to take them home?? They don’t because they don’t know if the illegals are dangerous or not ..

I don't understand why the Correctional Officer is under investigation and the illegal protesters are not. I also agree that it's okay to protest - but peaceful protests and not at the expense of others. And that these protesters were blocking the CO from getting to work, and then pounding on his vehicle?? That's okay? And what was he supposed to do, sit there in his vehicle until the protesters torched it? These so-called "protesters" are just your average anarchists. The Police don't get involved? What about the driver's rights to move about freely? If there is damage to his vehicle, who pays for it? And if the driver (any driver in a situation like this) fears for his life? The CO did the right thing - he pulled forward to get through the disruptive crowd. We've seen enough riots (I mean protests) turn very ugly and cars get physically attacked, turned over, rocks thrown at them. How does anyone really know that these thugs at this protest wouldn't break out and do similar things?

I’m sorry but they surrounded his truck and were attacking, I’d have done the same thing. My Mom taught me to not get in front of a moving vehicle.

If a vehicle is pulling up in the roadway and they didn’t move the idiots deserve whatever happens. The person was just trying to go to work. Liberal minded people think they deserve special treatment because “the right” to protest but they should have had sense to get out of the roadway.

OMG it is known as a "Liberal License" to terrorize, harass and interfere with anything they don't like. They were attacking one poor employee who was only trying to get to work on time and due his assigned duty. These morons don't understand that they scored 0 on this one. Where do their rights end and his begin? Harassing employees only makes them look more ridiculous!

The whole world is watching stupid people acting stupidly! The criminals blocked free access to a federal facility, but the employee attempting to go to work is being investigated? If he had had intentions, he would not have been going slow enough for the criminal idiots to surround him!

All jokes aside, I think he should be in the clear since he basically "inched" his way through. They had plenty of opportunity to move. It would be different if he had floored it and ran through them.

He gave them ample time to get out of the road. When is it legal to stop or hinder the flow on traffic in a roadway? The driver did nothing wrong in my book. And the protesters were not peaceful from what I saw.

IseeWhereThisIsGoing

You have the right to peacefully protest. You do not have the right to block the streets. you do not have the right to attempt to vandalize a vehicle that doesn't belong to you. You do not have the right to obstruct the entrance to the facility. This was not a peaceful protest, and the protesters were injured because they chose not to protest peacefully, and chose to act in a way that is against the law.

It's a shame the local PD leadership allowed the protesters to do this, and didn't arrest them immediately for blocking the flow of traffic. I have little sympathy for them, but I am sure they will be filing a lawsuit over their actions.

Grunt1959
Grunt1959

Peaceful protest cannot obstruct others from their right to enter the workplace. The cops were wrong not to clear the way. C O had every right to proceed, as they pounded on his vehicle causing him distress and possible harm.

Well done CO’s with the pepper spray. Non lethal, easy decontamination, copious amounts of fresh air and water!

You can't block traffic while protesting, because this ISN'T protesting, it's civil disobedience. However that doesn't make it open season on them, but many states have passed laws so that if you do run over a “protester” in the middle of the road, it's not your fault (unless of course it seemed intentional) as was the case in Charlottesville

If the idiots think they can win a fight with a pickup truck-they deserve to get hit.Common sense-which seems to be what most of these type of “activists” are lacking-goes a long way in the real world. I Pray that the LEO is not disciplined too harshly for defending himself against an angry-potentially dangerous mob. I also Pray that his fellow LEOs are not disciplined for coming to his defense-as I would have done the exact same thing, under these circumstances🇺🇸
