VIDEO: Cop Knocks Out Combative Suspect With One Punch

Wallingford Police Officer Joseph Smith was suspended for two weeks after he struck a combative suspect in the head.

Wallingford, CT – A Wallingford police officer who subdued a suspect with a strike to the head was suspended for alleged excessive force (video below).

Gary Joseph King, 26, headbutted Wallingford Police Officer Anthony Baur while he was being arrested in connection with a domestic disturbance, then proceeded to fight with officers as they were placing him into the back of a patrol vehicle, Wallingford Police Chief William Wright told the Record-Journal.

The incident occurred on June 14, when officers were called to a report of a domestic disturbance on Ward Street sometime between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.

King was allegedly “on an intoxicant,” and pulled a knife on the officers when they arrived at the scene, Chief Wright told the Record-Journal.

The officers were able to disarm and handcuff King, but he continued to fight with them as they searched him for weapons and contraband.

King then headbutted Officer Baur, hitting him in the face, Chief Wright said.

The officers wrestled King towards the back of a patrol vehicle, as he screamed and resisted their efforts, in-car footage showed.

The suspect refused to place his feet inside the car, and repeatedly attempted to get out of the vehicle.

During the struggle that ensued, Officer Smith delivered a single strike to the side of King’s head, and he immediately lost consciousness.

“He’s out,” one of the officers said.

They then removed King from the car and repositioned him so they could close the cruiser door.

Medics evaluated King at the scene, and he was subsequently transported to the Midstate Medical Center, Chief Wright told the Record-Journal.

He has since pleaded guilty to felony assault on public safety personnel, and is due back in court on Dec. 17 in relation to misdemeanor counts of interfering with an officer/resisting arrest, use or possession of drug paraphernalia, second-degree breach of peace, possession of marijuana, and failure to comply with a fingerprint request, the Record-Journal reported.

Officer Smith was also injured during the altercation, and has been on medical leave since that time, Chief Wright said.

He did not disclose the nature of Officer Smith’s injuries.

After Chief Wright watched the in-car footage, he asked the New Haven Judicial District prosecutor’s office for their input.

An investigator from the prosecutor’s office watched the video and recommended that it be forwarded to the Connecticut State Police.

According to Chief Wright, the state police concluded that Officer Smith had no criminal intent to harm King, and sent the investigation back to the Wallingford Police Department.

Two Wallington officers certified in use-of-force training and protocol subsequently determined that Officer Smith used excessive force during the arrest.

“Through their instruction, it’s consistently held that you never, ever, ever, strike anyone in the head,” Chief Wright told the Record-Journal. “Even in this case where [King] is fighting with them.”

Officer Smith, a nine-year veteran of the force, was subsequently suspended for a period of two weeks.

He had no history of disciplinary infractions prior to King’s arrest, and was named Police Officer of the Year in 2017, the chief said.

“[Officer Smith’s] record to this point had been spotless,” Wallingford Police Union spokesperson Larry Dorman told the Record-Journal in a statement. “This is an isolated incident that should not be interpreted as a reflection of the dedicated police officers who protect and serve the people of Wallingford."

“Everything up until the strike, everything is appropriate…and then thereafter the strike, everything is appropriate,” Chief Wright said. “It was that moment in time that, in an attempt to finally gain control of the situation, that the strike to the head took place that we can’t condone.”

"Officer Smith was also injured during the altercation, and has been on medical leave since that time, Chief Wright said." I wonder if he messed up his hand when punching the handcuffed suspect in the face.

Any Departments in need of a proven outstanding officer should be sending this good cop a job offer. From the video, he did nothing wrong. His Chief is a gutless PC wimp who should have stood behind his officer. And, so should his brother officers.

There are more than 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers now serving in the United States, which is the highest figure ever. About 12 percent of those are female.

If our police were head-butted by a person being arrested, by all rights, knock him out.

I used to gain control of them by reaching through their legs, grabbing their nut sack, squeezing very hard, twisting and pulling hard on it. For some odd reason, though they'd bray like a mule, they were pretty easy to control at that point.

dumbest rule i ever heard. if you are restricted from a punch to the head, that means you must lower your arms and go against a persons torso. doing so then exposes your face and head for another head butt or punch. (mr. bauer)

Should have knocked his ass out in the yard...would have made it easier to get his dumb ass in the car.

Looked justified to me. That is B.S. Policeman was doing his job with a real jerk. Head butting an officer opens the door to getting your ass kicked. All jerks like this should think about striking an officer.

The job of the police is not to punish. Sounds like one of the officers superiors decided that that was what he was doing, and the officer was punished, as he had to be so that all police officers better understand that there is accountability for police officers and that consequences follow bad decisions for police officers. Great job, Chief Wright!

Ok, if I read this correctly, the incident went all the way up to State Police for investigation, they clear the officer. Kicked back to his own department where fellow officers throw him under the bus for doing his job!!! WTF!!! Fighting the way the POS did with officers, he deserved a good f'n punch! Chief you should get out more with your officers and see the real world and not just the ivory tower, get a good punch yourself trying to subdue a suspect, or leave.

I would say that the officer should and probably has appealed the discipline based upon the decision by the State Police. In any confrontation with a violent person the longer it continues, the better the chance of officers being injured. This officer put an end to the resisting and violence in one move. Well Done Sir!!

WRONG WRONG WRONG the clown used his head as a weapon while fighting the officer....disable and disarm the thug of all weapons. I guess it would have been more acceptable to the two puppets of the politicians declaring excessive force had the officers not tried to take the knife away, but just shoot and kill his ass. Any time the quest for a decision goes so high then gets knocked back down to the local departmental level should tell the department it would be no billed at any other level. If they fight you, win the fight with as little damage done to yourself as possible. Next it will be if he is choking you out and you feel consciousness leaving you don't you dare shoot him.

Chief get off your ass and get out in the field with your guys. That dude bit that officers hand and he struck him to get him off. These liberal butt kissing chiefs are why the food officers are leaving departments and going federal or contract work. Shame on that son callled Chief.

Connecticut...What more do you expect? Why would anyone want to be a LEO there? This kid needed a good ass whipping to help him along his journey to become a man that is a useful part of our society. Will probably end up needing someone to care and provide for him his entire life. Yep! Obvious from his behavior that he is just another useless cupcake.
