VIDEO: Cop Gets Viral Praise For Disarming, Talking To Boys Brandishing BB Gun

A Columbus police officer almost shot an 11-year-old boy who had a BB gun that looked like a handgun in his waistband.

Columbus, OH – A police officer taught two young men a very important lesson after he disarmed them on Saturday.

Columbus Police Officer Peter Casuccio was doing a ridealong with a member of a community group on Oct. 13 when he received a call for two boys with a gun nearby, WSYX reported.

When Officer Casuccio spotted the 11- and 13-year-old boys matching the description of the suspects, he stopped them.

That’s when the 11 year old reached for his waistband where he had a black handgun.

“So I pull up on ‘em, and I’m not gonna lie to you, doing cop stuff, I drew down on them,” Officer Casuccio told the younger boy’s mother, a bodycam video of the incident showed.

“He freaks out and he starts to pull the gun out of his waistband,” the officer told her.

“He could’ve shot you for that, you know that?” she asked her son in the video.

“He dropped it real fast. But I didn’t know it was a BB gun until it hit the sidewalk,” Officer Casuccio told her, driving home his point.

The bodycam video showed the officer holding the two young men at gunpoint on the ground on the sidewalk.

Once the boys were back on their feet, Officer Casuccio gave them a firm lecture about how close a call they had just had.

"This is getting kids killed all over the country," he told them on the video.

The boys apologized, but the officer didn’t soften his approach.

“That thing looks real bro. You should be sorry, and you should be scared," Officer Casuccio told the 11 year old.

"I didn't want him to shoot," the 11 year old said.

"I know you didn't want me to shoot," the officer replied. "Do you think I want to shoot an 11 year old? Do you think I want to shoot a 13 year old?”

Officer Casuccio took the boy home and told his mom what had happened.

The video showed that before he left, he tried to impress upon the child how close he’d come to being shot once again.

"Your life hasn't even gotten started yet and it could have ended,” the officer told the 11 year old. "I could've killed you. I want you to think about that tonight when you go to bed. You could be gone. Everything you want to do in this life could've been over."

Please share this video and article with everyone you know. This officer deserves a life saving award because he may have save many children's lives by not only his actions but by the lecture to the youths. This is the kind of cops we need out there showing the best of men and women in blue. Keep up the good work.

Not withstanding some of his delivery, his message was great. I'd love to see more of this.

I'm so glad I'm reading this and not an article titled "Police officer shoots 11-year old who drew a gun on him, that was later found to be a BB gun". Well done, officer. An unspeakable tragedy for three families (the two kids and yours) was prevented.

As for the delivery, ok, he had not rehearsed it, but the intention of the message was to scare the kids into understanding how incredibly dangerous the whole thing was, and that was accomplished. Their mothers will take it from there.

Terrific police work! These are the way these stories should end. With everyone alive. I commend the officer for cool head.

Good job Officer, and yes, he deserves an award for his handling of the situation.

As a young teenager a buddy and I were going hunting for jack rabbits in Cypress, CA and both carrying .22 rifles. This was back in the early 60s. An Cypress police officer saw us, pulled over and stopped. He asked us where we were going and after we told him our plans he wished us good luck, to be safe then drove away. Today we would most likely be arrested and make the evening news but this story shows there are still great people out there working with the public and young people.

Now for some truth. This Officer only did what the situation ALLOWED him to do. If that scared 11yo would have been a little punk and pointed the weapon, we all know what would have happened!!! I'm so glad this child did not force an Officer to defend himself. His counsel to these two was very wise. Crisis averted because these two boys did the right thing and this Officer, just like ALL others never ever wants to intentionally harm a child.
