VIDEO: Cop Gets Dragged Down Busy Interstate After Stopping Driver For Phone Use

Dunwoody Police Officer Nathan Daley was dragged onto an interstate highway by a suspect fleeing a traffic stop.

DeKalb County, GA – A Dunwoody police officer was dragged onto a freeway and almost run over after he stopped a man for talking on a cell phone (video below).

The incident occurred at about 11:35 a.m. on Aug.1 when Dunwoody Police Officer Nathan Daley stopped 35-year-old Derric Alexander Simpson for talking on his cell phone while he was driving, in violation of the state’s hands-free law, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

As Officer Daley stood next to the driver’s window of the Chevy Malibu talking to him, Simpson started to put his car into gear.

Dashcam video from the officer’s police car showed that when the officer reached inside the car to stop him, Simpson slammed the gas and took off, with Officer Daley hanging out the window.

The two had been stopped on an entrance ramp to Interstate 285, and Simpson sped from the ramp onto the freeway within seconds, with the police officer hanging on for dear life, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Simpson drove in a reckless manner and slammed Officer Daley’s body into several vehicles on the highway, the video showed.

The he swerved into a white Ford van and knocked the police officer off and threw him into moving traffic.

Officers pursued Simpson but he crashed shortly thereafter near Roswell Road, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Once wrecked, the driver jumped out of his car and over the concrete wall and fled on food, the video showed.

An officer chased him down and took Simpson into custody quickly.

Police didn’t wait for an ambulance to transport Officer Daley. Instead, they scooped him up and raced him to the hospital in a police vehicle, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Officer Daley was later released from the hospital to recover at home.

Simpson was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated battery, fleeing or attempting to elude police, trafficking ecstasy, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, hit-and-run, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and violating Georgia’s hands-free law, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Court records showed Simpson remained held without bond in the DeKalb County Jail.

You know, it's the law, it sucks, but at the same time, it's kinda hard to feel sorry for the cop because he was enforcing some bullshit law that he should have known better than to mess with to begin with...

I only reached into a running car once and it was because the driver was passed out at a green light, car in drive, foot on the brake, bottle of whiskey in the center console and I got the door open without him waking up (I had already tried to wake him up with my voice and it didn't work and NO it wasn't a medical emergency Burgers). All I did was throw the car in park, turn it off and take the keys. I knew it was a risk and I was very careful and rehearsed it in my head before I moved. I thought they taught everyone not to reach into a car in the academy, it's just a bad idea and there are tons of stories like this. I made a judgement call because the dude was out cold. I don't think I'd ever try it on someone who was wide awake, much less already driving away. This was like one of the few things they always drilled into our heads regularly (always make sure you can see a person's hands, don't reach into a car, always get out of your car when you are approached by someone or you decide to talk to someone that is on foot, don't get so close to the car in front of you that you can't get around them etc...).

We have a society problem, not a gun problem, some people are just evil and nowadays they are emboldened by the liberal justice system by not getting mandatory sentences, people need to be held accountable especially when assaulting law enforcement, thank the Lord the officer is ok

Should have been charged with attempted murder!

Question for the police officers: I'm no expert, but isn't it a really, really bad idea to reach into a car like that? When you consider risk vs reward, maybe if he was on the FBI most wanted list or something, but for talking on a cell phone? Seems like a shitty way for a good guy to die, thankfully that didn't happen.

Why no charge for attempted murder of a police officer??????

Get well brother, I’m sorry you had to go through this ordeal. Keep on keeping on and continue to do your job without letting this incident hinder your judgement. “Let the courts sort em out.” Stay safe!

If I saw an office hanging out a moving car I would have put on my flashers and followed. Trying to slow traffic down. Thankful the officer was able to go home and recover there. Prayers for quick healing.

Bad move, Officer Daley -- you almost got yourself killed. They obviously need refresher training on not sticking your body parts so far into a vehicle that you cannot get out.

Ok. I’m gonna have a different take here. First, thank God The Officer is alright. But why do I keep seeing video after video of officers reaching into driver widow of cars trying to evade?! It’s incredibly dangerous and completely unnecessary. I know it’s not being taught in the academies. Not worth it guys. Step back. Let car leave then go get em.

I've often wondered why one of the officers don't shoot a tire out when this kind of sh*t happens?
