VIDEO: Cop Fights With Suspect As Men Hang Back And Record Instead Of Helping

Bystanders chose to record an officer in a fight instead of helping him.

Alexandria, VA - Surveillance video captured an officer's fight with a suspect as bystanders chose to record rather than help (video below).

The incident happened at around 3 p.m. Friday in the 8200 block of Russel Road, according to Fairfax County PD.

The unidentified officer contacted a man who smelled of marijuana, which gave him reasonable suspicion to detain the man. The officer subsequently asked him to stop.

The man, later identified as 23-year-old Dadrian Jegede, walked away from the officer instead of stopping. As the officer tried to stop him, the suspect pushed the officer and tried to escape.

A struggle ensued, which moved in front of the security camera where the officer could be seen fighting with the suspect for over a minute before backup arrived.

While the officer was fighting the suspect, numerous men came by who all chose to watch or record the struggle instead of helping the officer.

With the help of the second officer, Jegede was taken into custody. He is being charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute (dealing drugs).

Jegede was also served with an outstanding arrest warrant out of Prince William County.

Along with the release of the video, Chief Roessler issued a statement saying, "Law enforcement is a rewarding profession but it can be very dangerous at times.  Officers often put themselves in harm’s way to protect our community.  When we encounter someone who resists a lawful arrest and attacks us, we are concerned for the sanctity of all human life.  As a matter of transparency we provide this video to demonstrate the dangers of our profession.  My officers were professional at all times to overcome a violent criminal and I stand behind their actions.”

I haven't watched the video yet. I don't know how this officer fared but in general good DT training is a good policy for any department.

BJJ/MMA really work but it takes time to learn. I saw a dude in my academy class run through 10 or so of my classmates in under two minutes each (and a lot of them were bigger and stronger than he was) using Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I did it for a few years but it became near impossible to train when we had our third kid.

Also, it's hard to fight well in duty gear, even if you train for it. That being said, I never felt I was in too much danger while fighting one person (never fought anyone on PCP though). The only people that worried me were people with more training, determination and no aversion to violence. I definitely think more departments should adopt it as regular training but there's usually some guy whose been teaching bad DT for years and won't give up the throne or he indoctrinates his successor.

Can't use the word Eunachs, that would imply they once were men.

I wonder what happened to Hi_estComnDenomnn? I bet that sailor want-to-be a-hole with a similar name complained to management because he was being outsmarted. Yep, he apparently has no problem dishing it out but can't take it when someone does it to him.

I didn't see a black man and a white cop. I see a cop trying to stop, someone who commits a crime. Those that choose to film are not filming to show the policeman doing his job but to show how police are evil. This video, shows that those watching are weak and don''t care about their area. In some areas there is a presence of more policeman because there is a higher crime rate, not because of skin color. Being law abiding citizen don't need as many police. But it takes courage and brains to do what is right So my question, is why should this matter or situation keep going on. Are we honest being or someone, who wants to be weak?

I can't even watch it all. these "people" disgust me. There should be a law against those that stand there and video any assault instead of helping in some way. Even it was just to call 911 for assistance.

If the officer used a claw - the whole incident would be over in about 15 seconds

Incorrect. Those are young black men standing around. The correct response for their safety would be to not interfere in a cop-involved struggle.

Hell, based on the comments on this site ALONE, why would a cop who thinks like you people expect a young black man to help?
