VIDEO: Best Buy Security Guard Fired For Tackling Fugitive Who Attacked Deputy

The U.S. Army veteran has lost his security guard job at Best Buy due to his heroic actions.

Roseville, CA – A Best Buy security guard was fired by the company, after he helped deputies capture a fleeing suspect by tackling him to the ground in the store parking lot (video below).

The incident occurred on Jan. 11, after Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) detectives tracked 35-year-old fugitive Timothy Trujillo to the Best Buy store in Roseville, KXTV reported.

Tyler, who only wanted his first name to be used, said he noticed a group of undercover sheriff’s deputies as they converged on the suspect out in the parking lot, according to KTXL.

But the fugitive then went on the fight, punching one of the deputies and knocking him to the ground.

“When they confronted him, the man punched one of the detectives and tried to run off,” PCSO Lieutenant Andrew Scott explained. “That’s when the security guard tackled the man, preventing him from escaping.”

Security footage showed Trujillo as he raced through the packed parking lot.

“He started running past me and I thought I was doing the right thing by stopping him,” Tyler told KTXL.

As Trujillo ran past the front of the building, Tyler suddenly darted into the frame, and quickly closed the gap between him and the fleeing suspect, the video showed.

The security guard and Trujillo both sailed through the air as Tyler slammed into him, landing hard on the asphalt several feet later.

As soon as Trujillo hit the ground, Tyler jumped to his feet and backed away, and the deputies moved in to take the suspect into custody.

“Obviously, we are very grateful [Tyler] intervened," Lt. Scott told KXTV. "Luckily no one was hurt. That’s our first and most pressing concern in something like this, but because he intervened, we were able to catch this man and take him off the streets."

Tyler, a U.S. Army veteran, said he knew there would be consequences for his decision to intervene, but that he didn’t hesitate to do what he felt was right, KTXL reported.

“I understood that when I went back in there I was going to get into some type of trouble because Best Buy policy says we aren’t supposed to touch anybody,” he told the news outlet. “[But it] seemed like it was the right thing…Someone [was] running from the cops – seemed like the logical thing to do.”

Best Buy fired him on Friday, he told KXTV.

“My manager called me in and said corporate decided to let me go because I used excessive force and it was against Best Buy’s policy to intervene,” Tyler said, according to KTXL.

“Our policy is clear, employees are not to chase potential criminals outside of the store,” Best Buy told KTXL in a statement. “Chasing an individual in the parking lot creates a safety risk that isn’t worth taking, regardless of how noble an employee’s intention is.”

Tyler said he is not upset with the company, but that he also does not regret helping the deputies take a violent fugitive into custody.

Trujillo was wanted out of Nevada at the time of his arrest, KXTV reported.

Detectives located stolen property, burglary tools, and methamphetamine in his vehicle, and were also able to connect him with multiple local burglaries.

He has been charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools, possession of methamphetamine, and assaulting and resisting a peace officer.

You can watch footage of Tyler’s swift tackle in the video below:

Then why bother to have a security guard. Is he only supposed to catch toaster thief’s Best Buy should be ashamed of themselves. Heaven forbid if anyone should help the police

Let me see if I got this right. A bad guy is running from the police. He is running toward the entrance to Best Buy. The Best Buy security guard sees this and takes action that keeps the bad guy from potentially running into the store, thereby keeping Best Buy, employees and customers alike, safe. 2+2= getting fired for doing your job. A happy plus is that the police catch the bad guy.

The Sheriff's department needs to hire this guy. Bestbuy wonders why they get robbed constantly. Freaking losers.

Best Buy should rethink their policy about firing for an offense of their policy. Obviously someone in that organization is anti-police. A letter of caution or other disciplinary action would have been more appropriate.

So, how about a warning not to do this again

instead of firing this man?

This is not a good luck for Best Buy

Best Buy, your not the only electronics store, your policy sucks. People should buy from a store that supports rightful actions, not one that supports losers!

It is not Best Buy's fault, with the repercussions of being sued or L & I claims they don't want to be libel. All those stores want is security people to be is visible. They want them to as useful as a wooden Indian.

ProGODProUSA

Store policy for security is to not follow shoplifters out the door. This was not a violation of that sort of policy. This termination of employment with them is not going to look good for Best Buy, once people know that they fired a veteran.

I understand Best Buy’s policy. However I don’t agree with what they did to their security guard. I think what he did was right. And was in the right place at the right time. I’d rather have a security guard that isn’t afraid to jump in when absolutely needed. The policy they have in place to me seems like it’s almost alright to try and do something wrong since security isn’t allowed to use force to stop someone. I think some things need to be changed

Before protesting BB or calling them bad realize that this same action would have been taken by nearly every other major retail company and for good reason. While his deed was good, you HAVE to understand why this action has to be taken and the magnitude of things that can go wrong.

To hell with Best Buy then. The officer required assistance. You tackled the suspect and immediately stood aside for the officer to take over... Try applying for a job with the police. Good job!

Hey. Dimwitted corporate idiots. It's against MY policy to do business with ANY corporation that's not concerned about customers safety or American's safety who has a policy of standing by and not stopping criminals due to fear of lost dividends to stock holders because of a POSSIBLE law suit!

Best buy policy is the same policy of almost every retail store. Loss Prevention/security has a policy directing "security" they're not even allowed to go past the edge of the sidewalk. I've seen it a hundred times where LP has attempted to stop someone and they just casually walk away. Bad enough they can't even get a tag from the thieves vehicle. LP are the eyes, not security. SERIOUS POLICIES from serious people. Great job of the veteran. You can sleep well at night knowing you're one of the good guys.

Typical corporate bullshit. I will think hard before going into a Best Buy to purchase; there are many other stores. Best Buy doesn’t give a crap about the lawful citizens. Their security guards are only there to protect STUFF NOT PEOPLE.

This is an outrage Tyler the Army veteran may be okay with being fired but I'm not and neither should anybody else. Each one of us should be calling Best Buy corporate office. Concerning the incident on January 11th@ Roseville California location. The online number is 612-291-1000 for the Best Buy corporate office. They need to know just how outrageous it is for them as an American company to follow a policy that would fire an American for doing a good deed. instead of standing behind their employee they prefer to wash their hands. This is not okay and should not be allowed by us. It is past time that we stand up for the good people out there doing things the right way, The Honorable way.

How about Best Buy can be thankful that they have someone working for them that came to the aid of Law enforcement instead of letting this criminal get away with hitting them . Best Buy has just lost a customer or should I say a family of them since my family is full of Law enforcement. I think any company that has such a dim view on such an awesome story deserves whatever blow back they get. This security guard was a hero and got kicked in the ass for it. Best Buy you suck!

Corporate America is worried about liability for lawsuits from these losers. It's all about $$$$$.

Ravenhide
Ravenhide

Uh... isn't that the entire point of having a security guard or a security force in general? Best Buy parking lot is still a part of the building's premises, which means as a SECURITY GUARD he is well within his job description to stop someone who is a thief, regardless of whether said thief is in the store or in the parking lot. Fucking duh.

Boater

Agree, bye BB. They care about criminals before LE and good guys

Bobholly79

Just boycott BB!

is there a good samaritan law?

oh wait a minute its California!!! they love their criminals and illegals!!!!

It's Just My Opinion
It's Just My Opinion

If a customer is accosted on Best Buy's property, which includes their parking lot unless they are in a mall/multi stores location, BB could find themselves on the wrong end of a lawsuit for failure to provide security to persons on their property even if it's outside of the store bldg proper.
