Baltimore, MD – Police released bodycam and helicopter video on Friday of a rolling gun battle in downtown Baltimore that ended after 13 officers opened fire on the suspect (video below).
The suspect, 30-year-old Tyrone Domingo Banks, was the same gunman who tried to murder two Baltimore police officers on Aug. 27.
That incident began at about 1:16 a.m. when a silver car tried to run over a Baltimore police officer who was out of his vehicle conducting a traffic stop in the 2400-block of Reisterstown Road, The Baltimore Sun reported.
Another officer on patrol in the area spotted the suspect vehicle about three minutes later at an intersection in the 1500-block of Pennsylvania Avenue.
Police said that as the officer approached the silver car in his police car, the suspect jumped out of his car and opened fire on the officer with a handgun, The Baltimore Sun reported.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said the officer was able to back away in time to avoid being shot.
A 9mm shell casing was recovered later from the scene, The Baltimore Sun reported.
The driver fled and police pursued him through the city until a Baltimore police major ordered the officer to terminate the pursuit when it reached I-295, a six-lane highway that runs out of the city.
Officers continued searching for the suspect vehicle throughout the day, and at about 11 p.m., they spotted it, WBAL reported.
Commissioner Harrison said a large number of officers responded to the area, and there were two encounters between officers and the suspect that involved an exchange of gunfire.
Police first encountered the suspect at Fayette and North Caroline Streets and fired at him, The Baltimore Sun reported.
The suspect jumped back in his car and drove down Caroline Street with police right behind him.
Commissioner Harrison said officers opened fire on the suspect again when he stopped a block later, The Baltimore Sun reported.
Video from the Baltimore Police Department’s helicopter, Foxtrot, showed that Banks pointed his gun at officers several times during the incident, WBAL reported.
It showed officers talking to a person on the sidewalk when they spotted the silver car in the middle of the street beside them.
One of the officers called out that he saw a gun and told the citizen they were helping to hide, the video showed.
Then he dashed back to his patrol unit and grabbed a semi-automatic rifle.
He and his partner ultimately jumped into their vehicle and pursued the suspect, along with a number of other police officer, the video showed.
The helicopter video showed that Banks drove down the sidewalk and hit a tree.
Banks came to a stop and then began pointing his weapon at officers from the driver’s seat of his vehicle, the video showed.
Bodycam and helicopter video showed police surrounding Banks and making a tactical approach.
Commissioner Harrison told reporters at a press conference to release the footage that one of the bodycam videos showed the incident well from start to finish, according to WBAL.
The commissioner said it was clear that Banks presented a legitimate threat.
Officials said the officer-involved shooting was still under investigation and that ballistics work was still being done to determine which officer fatally shot Banks, WBAL reported.
