VIDEO: 8 Teens Arrested For Attacking, Threatening To Kill Cops
Brick, NJ – Eight teenagers were arrested after a riot at a condominium complex left one officer injured on Friday (video below).
The incident began at about 3:45 p.m. on Jan. 3 when two Brick Township police officers responded to the Maple Leaf condominium complex in the 200-block of Sawmill Road for a report of a fight, the Brick Patch reported.
When police arrived on the scene, they approached a large group of juveniles to investigate and one of the girls took off.
The officers told the girl to stop, and then she turned around and spit on an officer, the Brick Patch reported.
Brick Township Police Sergeant Jim Kelly said officers took the girl into custody and a large crowd began to form.
Sgt. Kelly said an unruly group of more than two dozen people surrounded the officers, the Brick Patch reported.
The sergeant said the group crowded the officers and yelled, threatened, and taunted them.
Sgt. Kelly said two of the teenagers threatened to kill the police officers, according to the Brick Patch.
He said one of the officers was hit in the brouhaha.
Cell phone video posted by a witness showed the first two responding officers fighting with several aggressive teenagers as they tried to take the first girl into custody.
“Yo, you’re a b---h!” one of the boys in the crowd yelled as an officer took a teen to the ground in front of him, the video showed.
The crowd could be heard yelling racial epithets and obscenities in the video as the officers struggled to take people into custody.
Eventually, additional Brick Township police, as well as Toms River, Point Pleasant, and Lakewood police, arrived on the scene to help, the Brick Patch reported.
But despite the additional manpower, the angry crowd grew in size and became even more chaotic.
Sgt. Kelly said the aggressive crowd refused to disperse, according to the Brick Patch.
Police arrested eight juveniles between the ages of 14 and 17 at the scene.
All of the teenagers were residents of the Maple Leaf condominium complex and one of the eight arrested was a female, the Brick Patch reported.
Sgt. Kelly said that all eight juveniles were charged with riot.
The sergeant said most of the teens were also facing additional charges that included aggravated assault, resisting arrest, obstruction, terroristic threats, and disorderly conduct, the Brick Patch reported.
He said the Brick Township officer who was struck during the chaos was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Brick Township police have cracked down on crime in the Maple Leaf complex in recent weeks, the Asbury Park Press reported.
Police said that a teen used a box cutter to commit a robbery in the complex in July of 2019.
And officers seized BB guns, ski masks, heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, and more contraband from suspects in that housing complex just before Christmas, the Asbury Park Press reported.
