VIDEO: 6 People Shot As Gangbanger Engages Police In Gunfight On Busy Street

Reginald Bursey opened fire on police, leading to a shootout that left five bystanders with gunshot wounds.

New Orleans, LA – The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has released security footage of a chaotic gun battle that broke out in the city's central business district on Feb. 17 (video below).

Reginald Bursey, a 32-year-old gang member with warrants out of Texas, was killed during the shootout, police said.

Five innocent bystanders were also wounded during the exchange of gunfire, WDSU reported.

The harrowing encounter began after two undercover NOPD officers were alerted that Bursey went into a nearby clothing store and used a credit card that had been stolen during an earlier armed robbery, The Advocate reported.

Officer Amit Bidichandani, 26, and his partner began moving towards Bursey from behind, while uniformed officers pulled up in front of him and got out of their patrol vehicle.

Bursey immediately drew a handgun from his waistband and opened fire on the uniformed officers.

One officer fell to the ground, but was not struck.

But a 17-year-old girl, who happened to be walking behind the officer when Bursey opened fire, was hit in the left leg.

Officer Bidichandani and his partner, as well as uniformed NOPD Officer Brandon Anderson, 31, pursued Bursey down the block to the intersection of Elk and Canal Streets, where the suspect turned left.

Bursey reached backwards and fired wildly at the pursuing officers, who returned fire.

Three male bystanders standing on the sidewalk were wounded during the shootout by rounds that may have been fired by the officers, NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said.

Bursey continued to fire his weapon as he ran towards Tulane Medical Center, bus video footage showed.

A fifth bystander – a 32-year-old man – suffered a graze wound to the right hip from a round believed to have been fired by Bursey.

The gunman managed to put distance between himself and the pursuing officers, who slowed their chase in order to navigate blind corners.

That allowed Bursey time to tuck himself behind a bush in front of the hospital, where he remained as unsuspecting officers passed by.

Another bystander spotted Bursey, and pointed him out to police.

Suddenly, the gunman opened fire, attempting to ambush the officers from his hiding place in the bushes.

Surveillance footage captured two muzzle flashes from the suspect’s weapon.

Officers Bidichandani and Anderson and a Louisiana State Police trooper all returned fire, striking Bursey multiple times in his torso and extremities.

The officers disarmed Bursey and transported him to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Four of the wounded bystanders have been released from the hospital, and one remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

He is expected to recover, according to WWL.

“It is so unfortunate that our officers were forced into this violent confrontation — which was initiated by the suspect — and five of our citizens were hurt,” Superintendent Ferguson said during a press conference, according to The Advocate. “That has been the most difficult part for our officers.”

He described Bursey as “a very dangerous and desperate individual” who was “willing to do whatever it took to evade capture.”

According to the Columbus Police Department in Texas, Bursey was a known member of the 59 Piro Street Gang in their jurisdiction, WDSU reported.

The gang has ties to the Bloods in California, the department said.

His criminal history stretched back to March of 2004, when he was arrested for unlawfully carrying a weapon and possession of marijuana at the age of 17.

The following year, he had two separate arrests – one for providing police with a fake name, and another for felony theft over $1,500.

He was convicted of resisting arrest in 2009.

By 2016, Bursey had been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser offense, and was sentenced to two years in jail.

At the time of the New Orleans shootout, Bursey was wanted for armed robbery out of Colorado County, Texas, for allegedly tying two people up and robbing them at gunpoint on Sep. 8, 2018, WVUE reported.

According to police, Bursey then took off with the victims’ vehicle, which was later recovered outside a Houston motel.

He was on parole for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon at the time, according to a Colorado County Crime Stoppers Facebook post.

NOPD investigators said that Bursey returned to New Orleans sometime during the fall of 2018, The Advocate reported.

By November, he had a warrant out for his arrest for using his ex-girlfriend’s car without permission.

He also allegedly robbed a woman at gunpoint on Feb. 8, and took off with her cellphone, bag, and other belongings, police said.

One day prior to the shootout, Bursey carjacked two women at gunpoint in Central City.

His girlfriend, Amy Polk, claimed that Bursey resorted to crime in order to provide for their young daughters, ages nine and three.

“It was all for a purpose, trying to benefit something,” Polk said, adding that she was “not pleased with a lot of the things he did.”

Officer Bidichandani and Officer Anderson have been placed on desk duty, pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

The identity of the trooper has not been released.
