Raleigh, NC - The wife of the man who claimed he killed her after taking too much cold medicine was stabbed 123 times.
The incident occurred on September 1, when police received a 911 call from Phelps' husband, Matthew Phelps, age 27.
In the 911 call, Phelps told a dispatcher, "I had a dream, and then I turn on the lights and she's dead on the floor. I have blood all over me and there's a bloody knife on the bed, and I think I did it."
The dispatcher asked Phelps if the victim was awake, and Phelps said that she wasn't breathing. The dispatcher then asked Phelps if the victim was "beyond help", and he said, "I don't know. I'm too scared to get too close to her."
Phelps can be heard apparently sobbing during the 911 call, "She didn’t deserve this.. Why?"
When police arrived at the residence in the 5200 block of Patuxent Drive, Phelps told them that he "has trouble sleeping" and may have taken too much cold medicine.
The autopsy report showed that the victim "died from multiple stab wounds to her face, neck, torso, arms, and jugular vein."
When police arrived, they found her in the fetal position on her bedroom floor. She was taken to WakeMed where she was pronounced dead.
Officers obtained search warrants for the Phelps' residence and found an empty box of Coricidin HBP Cold and Cough. They also seized a knife block, bed sheets, Best Buy receipts, several computers, and credit cards.
In his report, the medical examiner said that Lauren Phelps had 24 stab wounds and 20 cuts to her head and neck, 13 stab wounds and 11 cuts to her torso, 16 cuts and one stab wound on her right arm. and 35 cuts and three stab wounds to her left arm.
Bayer, the maker of Coricidin, issued a statement after the incident, which said "Bayer extends our deepest sympathies to this family."
"Patient safety is our top priority, and we continually monitor adverse events regarding all of our products. There is no evidence to suggest that Coricidin is associated with violent behavior."
Phelps has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of Lauren Phelps, and is pending trial.
