Clinton, MO - Clinton Police Officer Gary Michael was murdered by Sunday night, and the suspected killer, Ian McCarthy has been able to elude capture ever since.
The incident occurred Sunday about 10:45 PM on East Green Street, south of Missouri Route 13, according to KCTV5. Sergeant Bill Lowe with the Missouri Highway Patrol said that Officer Michael stopped a Dodge Nitro for a registration violation.
After stopping the driver of the vehicle got out of the car during the traffic stop, and opened fire on the officer as he was getting out of his vehicle.
Officer Michael returned fire, and the driver fled in his vehicle. The driver crashed his vehicle about two blocks from the traffic stop, and fled on foot. It is not known if the driver was shot during the gunfight.
The killer's rounds went through Officer Michael's soft body armor. The officer was transported to a local hospital where he later died. Police said that he had been with the Clinton Police Department less than a year.
