UFC Champion Jon Jones Arrested For DWI After Shots Fired Call
Albuquerque, NM – Ultimate Fighting Championship Jon Jones was arrested for aggravated DWI, negligent use of a firearm, possession of an open container and no proof of insurance on Thursday.
A police report states that an Albuquerque police officer responded to a single gunshot at about 1 a.m.
The officer saw a black Jeep with Jones in the driver’s seat and another person outside the vehicle by the passenger-side door.
There was an open bottle of alcohol behind the passenger seat, according to ESPN.
USA Today stated that the police officer said that Jones “had green leafy substance on his shirt and pants, consistent with marijuana” and “an odor of alcohol coming from his facial area.”
When questioned by police, Jones told the officer he didn’t know where the gunshot came from.
“I got stir crazy. I got pulled over just being nice, being nice to the homeless people,” Jones told the officer, according to USA Today. “I literally just got stir crazy. I just wanted to have a drive. This is my first drive in two weeks. And I saw these homeless guys, I was being nice to them, having conversation with them, treating them like humans.”
The police report noted, “Jonathan did field sobriety tests and performed poorly on all three of them. He also performed poorly on two out of three alternative tests. He was searched and arrested.”
The Jeep was towed from the scene and then searched by police. A handgun was found underneath the driver’s seat as well as one shell casing that matched the caliber of the handgun, according to ESPN.
Albuquerque police said the gun belonged to Jones and that it would be tested to see if it was used in any other crimes.
Jones was at or above twice the legal limit when he was given a breathalyzer after he was arrested, according to ESPN.
Jones, 32, is scheduled for a court appearance on April 8.
Jones has a 26-1 record in the MMA with 10 knockouts. His last fight was Feb. 8 against Dominick Reyes when Jones won by unanimous decision.
