U.S. Coast Guard Member Pulled From Hurricane Response For 'Racist' Hand Gesture

A U.S. Coast Guard team member is under investigation for displaying a hand gesture some say is racist.

Charleston, NC The United States Coast Guard has removed a member of the Charleston emergency response team after a news broadcast showed him making an okay hand gesture.

Outrage followed from people who have fallen for a hoax that the gesture a symbol for white power (video below).

The 12-second clip was part of MSNBCs live coverage on Friday, during which Sector Charleston Commanding Officer Captain John Reed provided an update regarding the Coast Guards response to Hurricane Florence, FOX News reported.

In the background, and unnamed team member was seen making an okay hand gesture, the video showed.

The hand sign is also affiliated with a viral trend known as the circle game, where the goal is to make somebody look at your hand ask you flash the okay sign below waist level.

Many social media users demanded that the team member be fired and accused him of making a white power hand sign, FOX News reported.

The myth that the OK sign actually meant "white power" was started by internet trolls on 4chan, an anonymous message board, in February of 2017, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

We must flood twitter and other social media websites with spam, claiming that the OK hand sign is a symbol of white supremacy, the anonymous poster wrote, according to ADL, a civil rights organization. Leftists have dug so deep down into their lunacy. We must force [them] to dig more, until the rest of society aint going anywhere near that s--t.

Users encouraged people to perpetuate the hoax using hashtags such as # PowerHandPrivilege and # NotOkay, created fake social media and email accounts, and bombarded journalists and civil rights organizations with the misinformation.

No one should assume anything about the use of such a gesture unless there are other unmistakable white supremacist signifiers in that context as well, Anti-Defamation League senior research fellow Mark Pitcavage said in a Tweet, according to The Post and Courier.

But the U. S. Coast Guard was swift to denounce the team member's actions.

We are aware of the offensive video on Twitter, the agency tweeted on Friday night. The Coast Guard has identified the member and removed him from the response.

His actions do not reflect those of the United States Coast Guard, the agency added.

On Sunday, Coast Guard Lieutenant J.B. Zorn said the investigation into the incident is ongoing, The Post and Courier reported.

The Coast Guard is aware that this gesture is offensive in some circles, Lt. Zorn said. Whether it was displayed knowingly or unknowingly, that is of concern.

This doesnt reflect any of the great work the Coast Guard is doing, he added.

OMG This is getting beyond absurd. I am beginning to truly hate all these "everything is racist". saying whiter than white, is racist. saying pot calling kettle black", is racist. Don't move, don't say anything for fear it's racist. At one place i worked we had a 15yr old volunteer, i was in my late 40's early 50's and i asked where the boy was. OMG one of the employees came to me to tell me that was racist. I worked the same place and one of the other employees had to scramble up some stuff to get me something, i mentioned she was climbing it like a spider monkey. OMG i got told that was racist. On public transit every day and there was a woman sitting in handicapped seating, i asked her to move as a man getting on the next stop was blind and couldn't tell where she was sitting and had actually fallen as a result of a similar incident. OMG I got told off that i was racist. Just because we're white people, we are being discriminated against because of what we say, do and breathe, but that's not racist. Racism is defined as against all races people, and it's being allowed against lighter skinned people.

Angeleyes - "Why is everything seen by the black community as being racist?? I'm so sick of every thing a white person did/does is racist"

Hello Angeleyes- if you look at the posts written by "hardtopost" - almost anything is considered "racist" by that writer... and that should be your very first clue . Very little is actually truly racist in nature but the word is used as a figurative weapon then twisted and misconstrued to give the accuser power and an ability to "get back" at another individual or group. It gives power to those who may themselves feel quite powerless. Blacks (and some others) have found that by making the accusation and calling another racist it allows the accuser to gain power and they may even get something out of it as a result...that could be status, attention, apologies, getting their own way , even compensation .Some who are accused then worry or are embarrassed how they will be perceived and don't like being perceived as a racist so they avoid confronting the issue without asking "why?". Blacks tend to use the word as leverage and to bully by making some feel guilty. By throwing the word out so often it becomes truly meaningless and nothing but an overused cliche'. The receiver of the accusation should think for themselves and realize the "whys" behind the accusations. The receiver should stand and decide they wont be bullied by such a cheap and ignorant tactic. The receiver needs to ask the question as to "why is that racist?" Keep asking. I will bet the accuser will not be able to explain why. So often, the accusation made by calling another racist is just that , a cheap tactic with a personal agenda. Personally, I know I am not a racist and no longer care if I am called a racist as it has become a meaningless ploy used to try to "win" by others who have found it has worked well for them in the past. Don't fall for the nonsense and the agendas and stop worrying about being PC at all costs. Realize that you may otherwise get "played" if you don't stop and think and stand up for yourself. Have confidence in what you say and stop second guessing yourself because of some whiny ignorant idiot.

Are you kidding me??? The Coast Guard should be embarrassed by their actions! AN "OK" is an "OK....that is that!!! Hate to see what will be done with Winston Churchill's "V"....that has GOT to be so racist!!! Whatever! I too am so very tired! Maybe, just maybe..the employee truly did mean..OKAY! Who is to say what another means but the individual himself/herself!

Well Coast Guard, you certainly showed yourselves to be flippin goofy didn't you? I have seen that okay sign used for years. I recently watched a video where a recuse worker was saving the life of a man in the ocean whose boat had capsized. The rescue worker went into the ocean with the boater, fixed a sling around him and gave the "OKAY" sign for the man to be lifted up to the plane. Funny, how I don't recall the victim filing a law suit against the rescuer using the okay sign. People are so freakin insane today.

Have we really come to this?? This is beyond pathetic!! The liberal lunacy has truly overcome all that was left of normalcy in this country; the "backbone" of America has sat back and accepted the garbage for way too long, I don't believe there's any hope of digging out of the mess and chaos we've allowed to take control.

This is really stupid, or should I say ignorant. The next thing will be someone saying that scratching your head is some kind of white power sign. Give it a rest people.

So when a Catholic makes the sign of the cross, will they be accused of being KKK? Stop catering to the fringe groups!

Ah, the outrage, the horror, the obscenity! Here's the closet super racist Helen Hunt slipping a twin White Power sign in the movie "What Women Want" (2000) without the director, producers and audience noticing. To add insult to injury, she does this during the presentation of a Nike (Nike!!) ad campaign.

I am so triggered right now that I'm kicking the walls of my safe space. When my hissy fit recedes, I will contact Shaun King and Lee Merritt to start a petition campaign in my local Starbucks and social media to have Helen Hunt incarcerated for life. How dares she!!

I am so traumatized I might end up dying my hair in a different shade of blue and go back to Berkeley to fuck some shit up!

Well I guess we have to start looking at sign language shown on TV during speeches. And relook at our policies and procedures for tactical teams using hand signals...This is just getting un-Fing believable...

This is all started by WHITE liberals. No one is more stupid then white liberals. They are the arbiters of who gets to say what and when, or show whatever symbol. Bet these left wing fools never say anything about the gang symbols flashed about killing someone or hurting someone.

I'm not familiar with that hand gesture as being racist. I guess his superiors just wanted to be absolutely sure. Better safe than sorry. If it was an innocent gesture then I'm sure the man will be reinstated with no muss, no fuss.

As an ex Coastie I think the actions of his superiors were idiotic. In fact, that was the symbol used to show all was OK when verbal communications were unavailable. Let the bastards who complained drown while brothers risk their lives to pull their sorry asses from the flood waters. Like law enforcement be sure to be there when you need us and kicked to the curb and screwed when you don't.

@junkmansj Showing your unculture on full display, huh?

He's not throwing an OK symbol. That's the 'nupe' sign for Kappa Alpha Psi, a worldwide black fraternity. It's not even a circle, it's a diamond.

Clown.

.....same with calling a boy...."a boy" especially if he is below 16 yrs old............Thinking back I remember that I was called "Master" prior to my first name at about 10 or 12 ( an old English term-- IE-"Master first name")........It didn't mean I was a Plantation owner or slave owner. Yet some will misconstrue anything to create a false narrative or feed a personal agenda. Always think of the "whys " behind the accusation.

Oh and BTW-- Its perfectly OK to say or gesture "OK". Please read my other post below to explain more of the "whys" behind the accusations.

@jinx73 I'm close to you in age and too old to learn a new dictionary or hand signals. It means OK to me, always will. Can't control the feelings of others. If they choose to get offended, I hope they enjoy it because I can't help them.
