Florence, OR - Two officers were "seriously assaulted" during an altercation with an inmate on Monday that started when they were releasing him.
According to OregonLive, the incident occurred around 9 AM at the Florence jail as the officers were trying to release the 40-year-old man from custody. The man started assaulting the officers, and Oregon state troopers and other police officers responded to assist.
Medics arrived and began treating the injured officers, and then turned their attention to the inmate, who had become unresponsive. He was transported to Peace Harbor Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The officers' names have not been released, and their condition is not known.
The suspect's name is not known at this time and the cause of death will be determined after an autopsy.
The investigation is ongoing, and the Oregon State Police Criminal Division is assisting.
