Chicago, IL - Two Chicago Police Officers were shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood Tuesday night, and their shooter is still on the loose.

According to The Chicago Tribune, the incident occurred about 9 PM in the 4300 block of South Ashland Avenue.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said that they were shot during an "encounter", and were taken to John H. Stoger Hospital of Cook County. He said that both officers remain hospitalized in serious condition.

The incident started after officers saw somebody in a silver van shooting at another vehicle. A vehicle believed to have been used by the shooters was found near 37th street and Racine Avenue and either a rifle or shotgun was recovered near the scene.

A large police presence is in the neighborhood, and traffic is being directed away from the scene.

Neither officer was identified. One officer was reported to have been shot in the back, and the second officer was reported to have been shot in the arm and hip. No further details have been released at this time, and the manhunt is still underway.

Both Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel are en route to the hospital.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured Chicago police officers, and all of the officers out hunting these would-be cop killers.

UPDATE: The officers are doing well, three people are being questioned but no suspects identified yet.
