San Antonio, TX – Two armed citizens stopped to try to intervene when they saw a man murdering a woman in an elementary school parking lot last Saturday.
John Bogard, 89, has been arrested and charged with murder, according to KSAT-TV.
Neighbors told police that Bogard allowed homeless people to stay at a property he owned nearby Walzem Elementary School, but also said they frequently heard him arguing with them.
Police said that on May 19, Bogard got into an argument with a woman staying at his property.
As the woman was walking away, Bogard got into his Ford Focus and ran her over several times in the elementary school parking lot next door, KSAT reported.
Two separate witnesses with concealed handgun licenses stopped to assist the woman.
They fired at Bogard to try to get him to stop, and then shot out one of the tires on Bogard’s car, KENS-TV reported.
Neighbor Jose Sandoval lives behind the property and told KSAT he’d spoken to the victim shortly before she was killed.
"He was chasing her with his car, and he struck her. She flew over the car and landed by the back tire. He put the car in reverse and ran her over," Sandoval told KSAT.
He said he saw Bogard get out of his car to see the woman’s body stuck under the car before he drove off.
“My wife screamed, ‘She’s still alive,’ because you could see her breathing,” Sandoval said.
KENS reported that the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police quickly located Bogard’s car, with its flat tire, at his home just minutes away from the elementary school. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Neighbor Hector Lopez said Bogard and the woman he ran over had a history of arguing over “the smallest thing.”
